I Refuse To Give Rebecca Watson The Secular Woman of the Year Award

As you may know, the wonderful organization Secular Woman gives out some important and meaningful awards each year. And I am lucky enough to be the artist who actually creates the awards for them. That means I have the awards at my art studio and I send them out to the winners each year. I got the list from Secular Woman for this year, and it’s filled with some really wonderful people that I am more than happy to send awards to!

Here is that list:

President’s Award:
Melody Hensley

Activist of the Year:
Sarah Kaiser

Blog of the Year:
Miriam Mogilevsky

Member of the Year:
Marian Aanerud

Man of the Year:
Muhammad Syed

A BIG warm, whole-hearted congratulations to all of those winners! You SO TOTALLY deserve it! And your packages with the awards went out in the mail today.

HOWEVER, arguably the most prestigious of the awards given out by Secular Woman is the coveted, “Secular Woman of the Year” award.  And this year they told me Rebecca Watson won.

secular woman of the year

First of all, Rebecca has been my secular woman of the year every year since I met her. She is a wordsmith-princess. A master of science-based and secular-sarcasm. She holds in her hard-drive not only all of our passwords but also our hearts. She wields this network’s blog-ban-hammer like a blessed, golden gavel of justice, and for that we Skepchicks are all forever grateful. She is the always inspiring, rainbow-pooping unicorn of truth that we so admire. We look up to her. We aspire to be like her. We want to braid her mane and feed her carrots. Without her we are merely a blog. With her, we are a family and an island paradise where anything is possible. She is truly our queen.

BUT I have requested that she come to Los Angeles this February to spend some quality time with me and the women of LAWAAG. AND SHE HAS NOT CONFIRMED.

If she doesn’t come visit me for the month of my birthday, as formally requested, to be a special guest for The Los Angeles Women’s Atheist and Agnostic Group, then I am keeping her award and using it as a stepping stone in my garden. I am currently shopping for a solar powered garden gnome to place on top of it. I am hoping to use Amazon Prime.

THESE ARE MY TERMS.

I WILL NOT NEGOTIATE.

YOUR MOVE WATSON.

PS: Congratulations Rebecca!  We <3 u! If you agree to my terms I promise a ceremony fit for a queen at my castle, La Casa de Surly.

  1. Alternatively, since I am coming to LA in February, you could just give it to me, instead. I’ve always wanted to be Secular Woman of the Year.

  2. Amy, please let us know if this works.

We are trying to get speakers for our reboot of the Boston Skeptics Skeptics* in the Pub meetings. If your strategy works, I’ll propose we make an award, named after our founder, to be presented (annually?) to person we deem most worthy (i.e. that we can blackmail or coerce into showing up.) I further propose that the winner of the First Annual Rebecca Watson Kick-Ass Skeptic Award be none other than Rebecca Watson, but she will have to come here to receive it. Otherwise, she’s a buttface.

[*] not a typo – two Skeptics, no waiting!

P.S. Congratulations to all the winners!

Draw the battle lines, folks, this rift will be the deepest of them all! >:3
Uh, unless she turns up or has a really good excuse, that is… then it might fall a little flat.
