PAKISTAN
“The actor Veena Malik has expressed anger at a 26-year jail term handed down by a Pakistani court after she acted in a scene loosely based on the marriage of the prophet Muhammad’s daughter. The same sentence was extended to her husband, and to Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, owner of the Jang-Geo media group which broadcast the TV show.”

EGYPT
The first doctor to be brought to trial in Egypt on charges of female genital mutilation (FGM) has been acquitted, crushing hopes that the landmark verdict would discourage Egyptian doctors from conducting the endemic practice. Raslan Fadl, a doctor and Islamic preacher in the village of Agga, northern Egypt, was acquitted of mutilating Sohair al-Bata’a in June 2013. The 12-year-old died during the alleged procedure, but Fadl was also acquitted of her manslaughter.”

RUSSIA
“The Russian government allotted 30 million rubles ($750,000) for a social media campaign to combat rampant pseudoscience”. “The money, which will go toward a campaign on popular social media sites LiveJournal, Twitter, Facebook and VKontakte, is also meant to fund publications in the mass media and leaflets against pseudoscience, as well as lessons and journalistic workshops for students, the newspaper said, citing the Education and Science Ministry.”

IRAN
“A British-Iranian woman who was jailed while trying to watch a volleyball match in Tehran has been released from prison, her family said. Ghoncheh Ghavemi, 25, was arrested and sentenced to a year in jail for “propagating against the ruling system” after she and a group of other women tried to attend the men’s sports event on the 20 June.”

  1. Erdogan’s also claimed Muslims discovered America. But neither of those things piss me off as his letting ISIS on Turkish soil. There’s a reason I called him our century’s answer to Quisling.

    Oh, on schools for husbands, what’s interesting is, something similar is being done on Rosebud by the same guy who led the honor song after KXL was defeated.

    I personally wonder if anyone has pointed out to Erdogan that there are feminists who actually are mothers. That’s something I know. I guess feminist women must really all hate motherhood if a huge number of them are currently mothers, and expected mothers.

    Misogyny like racism, makes you say incredibly stupid things.
