On August 26, 1791, John Fitch was granted a US patent for the steamboat. Without this invention, I wouldn’t be humming “Proud Mary” right now. Or maybe I would, and it would be about a speedboat or something.

Mary

Mary Brock works as an Immunology scientist by day and takes care of a pink-loving princess child by night. She likes cloudy days, crafting, cooking, and Fall weather in New England.

  1. I wonder about the idea of letting victims have a say in the sentences of the criminal.
Isn’t that just leaving room for intimidation by the assailant and his friends? If the guy is actually a rapist, don’t we want to get him the hell off campus?
This reminds me of a recent argument with a rape-apologist douchebag. He was trying to find a situation where a woman would be at least a little bit at fault for being raped, so he concocted this “frat house where it’s known women get raped all the time. Wouldn’t it be a the woman’s fault if she knew that and went there anyway?”
You gotta take a step back there and say, “In this world you’ve invented, there’s a place where it’s well known women are raped and NO ONE IS DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT? Isn’t THAT the problem?”
Same here. I don’t know what to do in the short term, but allowing the stigma of ruining a circle of friends to be the reason we’re letting rapists off with a slap on the wrist doesn’t seem to help the cause at all.

  2. I remember reading a lot of posts about Orange on Facebook. This was not the only one that criticizes the opening sequence, but one young man said something that stayed with me: he said that he loved “Orange,” but that he “[couldn’t] stand watching the opening sequence because of all the un-retouched faces.” How telling. And yes, it received likes.

  3. Concerning the article on refusing vaccines – I know I am nit-picking, but the end, where she says she refused some vaccines at the hospital and spreading out the vaccines, bugged me. There is absolutely no reason to do this, and it is also a very privileged thing to do. You would need to have the extra time for those extra doctor visits, with no real benefit. And it may not be as bad as completely refusing vaccines, but if these diseases were not so relatively rate in the US, she would not have considered this and would have wanted her child protected as soon as possible.

  4. …oh my god, I can’t believe I never realized that “Proud Mary” was about a steamboat. I guess I somehow subconsciously always thought that the “big wheel” was metaphorical, or something?
