Quickies: No longer reading books by white men

And the danger of supplements, and the lives of cats

Why I’m no longer reading books by white men – I have also been doing this for about the past 4 years (with exceptions for LGBTQ+ men and very very few socially conscious men) and I’ve enjoyed it so much, I’m never going back. It’s not that I wouldn’t have read authors like NK Jemisin, Sam Delany, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie before, but it would’ve taken me longer to get to them. If you’re interested in reading diversely and need any author recommendations, ask in the comments!

Supplements for weight-loss, muscle building, and energy carry risk for youth – “The study, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, looked at reports to the Food and Drug Administration from January 2004 to April 2015. It concluded that compared to vitamins, those supplements carried nearly triple the risk of “severe medical events” in young people.”

Researchers strapped cameras to 16 cats and let them do their thing – Yes, there’s a video sample! Also: “Q: You thank the study cats in the paper’s Acknowledgements section. Why? A: I always acknowledge the animals I work with. I’ve been doing that since my Ph.D. thesis. I do feel thankful because if the cats didn’t oblige us, we couldn’t do the study.”
