Quickies: Refugees, Homeopathy, and Psychology Studies

  • 11 Memories of Not-So-Modern Medicine – Some parts of this article are a little unnecessarily alarmist in favor of old remedies, but it’s still neat to see how our medicine cabinets and doctors offices have evolved.
  • Connie Britton Reveals Her Best Beauty Secret… Feminism! – Feminism, apply directly to the forehead. From mrmisconception.
  • Vietnamese ‘Boat Person’ Speaks Out About Refugee Crisis – “Among those closely following the plight of Syrian refugees are those who know firsthand what it means to flee one’s homeland with no assurance of ever reaching a safe destination.”
  • Humans aren’t so special after all: The fuzzy evolutionary boundaries of Homo sapiens – “Ever since Darwin, the researchers who study human evolution have been preoccupied with the characteristics that set humans apart from the other great apes: our large brains, bipedalism, hunting, abstract thought, and the use of technology. It’s long been assumed that these features came bundled together, according to William Kimbel, Director of Arizona State University’s Institute of Human Origins. Kimbel conducts fieldwork studies in East Africa in search of the origins of our species, and he thinks that shedding the assumption of the ‘package deal’ can open up new clues about the origin of our lineage.” From CriticalDragon1177.
  • A Physician Asks: Is Being Black Bad For Your Health? – “As a medical student, Damon Tweedy noticed that many of the diseases he learned about in class were more prevalent among black people than white people, and that the black patients often fared worse than their white counterparts. Tweedy, now a psychiatrist and the author of the memoir Black Man in a White Coat, theorizes that those differences spring from the fact that many black patients feel shut out and distrustful of a health care system that has a history of mistreating them.”
  • Drugs, Delusions, and (Actual) Doctors: A German Homeopathy Conference’s Alternative Ending. – “You know what spices a homeopathy conference up a bit? If you answered ginseng, you should probably stop reading now. If your first thought was psychedelic drugs, you were probably in Handeloh, Germany over the weekend where an alternative medicine conference experienced an alternative ending.” (Cue dramatic music: dunh dunh DUNNNH!) From cerberus40.
  • If Only One-third of Published Psychology Research is Reliable, Now What? – “Journals prefer to publish novel, cutting-edge research. And professional advancement is determined by making new discoveries, not painstakingly confirming claims that are already on the books. As one of our colleagues recently put it, ‘Running replications is fine for other people, but I have better ways to spend my precious time.’ “

  1. Mary,

By the way, speaking of science and evolution. An ad for a ridiculous book appeared in the margins of this website.

    —————————————————————
In 2013 Stephen Meyer’s book Darwin’s Doubt: The Explosive Origin of Animal Life and the Case for Intelligent Design became a national bestseller, provoking a wide-ranging debate about the adequacy of Darwinian theory to explain life’s history. In Debating Darwin’s Doubt: A Scientific Controversy that Can No Longer Be Denied, leading scholars in the intelligent design community respond to critiques of Meyer’s book and show that the core challenge posed by Meyer remains unanswered: Where did the influx of information essential to the creation of new body plans come from?
    —————————————————————

Never mind that Intelligent design is just another type of creationism, and like everything creationists say to argue against evolution, it has zero evidence to back it up. There is no debate over whether or not evolution happened, just how it happened at this point.

Here’s a link anyone in case any of you want to take the time to write something debunking it. I used “Do Not Link” to avoid raising its profile with search engines.
