Quickies: Black American Motherhood, Brain Perception Disorders, and Sarcasm is Awesome

  • Between the World and Me: Black American Motherhood – “There was a time when some of us believed our daughters were safe. ‘At least you have girls,’ a white colleague said to me after Trayvon Martin was murdered. Her flippant comment ignited a rage mingled with guilt and shame I felt at having soothed myself with the same thought. This was before Renisha McBride, Sandra Bland, before all of the videos, before the writers, witnesses, and recorders in this Age of Ferguson, as I like to call it, left us no place to hide.”
  • Today is Black women’s Equal Pay Day – It was really yesterday, but you should read this anyway. And use this as a talking point when people bring up “Equal Pay Day” or wage-equality in general. From Courtney.
  • A Sense Of Self: What Happens When Your Brain Says You Don’t Exist – “In his new book, The Man Who Wasn’t There, Ananthaswamy examines the ways people think of themselves and how those perceptions can be distorted by brain conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Cotard’s syndrome and body integrity identity disorder, or BIID, a psychological condition in which a patient perceives that a body part is not his own.”
  • Rachel Paul Is the Face of Juggalo Feminism – This is a very interesting article. But then this happens in the middle (emphasis mine): “Paul simultaneously resembles both a 1960s hippie feminist and a Juggalette. She wears wraps around her head. Walking around the Gathering, you’ll see her in a wife-beater, but at night she wears long robes while working as a tarot reader in the Gathering’s Bizzaro World tent.” Hmm I’m just going to leave that right there.
  • Sarcasm: How the ‘lowest form of wit’ actually makes people brighter and more creative – I agree with this headline, except I think fart jokes are probably a lower form of wit than sarcasm. From Amy.
  • It Used to Be Impossible to Find Black Dolls in Stores, So People Made Them at Home – This article is not just for doll collectors. Check out the amazing photographs within.
  • Arizona Cardinals hire Jen Welter as first female assistant coach – “If Hammon’s hiring was initially viewed as a gimmick, that’s no longer the case. Her immediate success has NBA insiders and observers wondering when she will be make history as the league’s first female head coach.” From Radium.
