Hello Buck: Using Facebook’s Handy Auto Reply

Here are a few things I learned today:

1. Some guy has been spamming the Skepchick Facebook page with messages about some spat between Biblical historians, which I couldn’t care less about.

2. Facebook offers a list of automated responses you can use to easily reply to messages. They include two to get you started, and then you can make your own.

3. The open source image editor Gimp has a brush that looks like a pepper, so you can have fun redacting the links that your spammer desperately wants the world to see.

Here’s how all that came together today (click to embiggen):

  1. I would listen to the guy. He seems to be an expert on extreme malice, which he attributes to you (for repeating the canned response “How can I help you?” 2 or 3 times), learned through his years of obsessing about Richard Carrier. (I’m sure I encountered something similar several years ago, but it made no sense at the time. I don’t know if it was this guy or someone else, but IIRC, Carrier had made the extremely malicious claim that someone was wrong on the Internet.)

Oh, and how can I help you?

  2. Doesn’t really matter, but I wonder if it has anything to do with Carrier coming out as polygamous. Some people are flipping out over that.

  3. The guy is obviously confused. He starts by attacking Carrier, then switches to attacking Ehrman, then quotes Carrier to attack Erhman. Focus buttmunch.

So why should Skepchick care exactly, because they slighted a woman or because they were wrong about something?

Let’s just call the whole lot doodieheads and be done with in?
