Quickies: Educating men about rape, Redditor who spread nude celeb photos wants privacy, and women’s roles on TV

  • Educating our young men about rape – “I believe that if we want to change behavior, we need to train young men to recognize sexual assault when it occurs and to internalize norms against it. Our conversations about rape need to start in our homes, at our dining room tables.”
  • Reddit user made famous off nude celeb photo leak wants his privacy back – So *private* photos are okay to make public but info that he posted in public internet forums should be kept private…right.
  • Do women get to follow their dreams on TV? Or do they just get the man? – “For evidence of this divide, think of Claire Underwood’s abandoned foundation work, Betty Francis’ lost modeling career and eventual remarriage, and even Olivia Pope’s sacrifice to walk away from a relationship with the president. Conversely, shows that have been conceptualized around women feature them losing, missing or having lost, something (Mom, 30 Rock, New Girl).” From Arturo.
  • Do farts carry germs? – Well, are you wearing pants?

  1. I swear I’ve seen that farting story, or one like it, before. In fact I remember someone farting on a petri dish with and without pants, I would say it was Mythbusters but I don’t think it was. I remember whoever it was getting some bacteria through pants but more without.

Anyway, that’s just the type of shit I have in my brain.

    1. Mythbusters did an episode on farts (which they referred to as “flatus”)

They tested foods/drinks for increased flatulence and tested whether they were flammable. They collected one of Adam’s farts for testing composition (he sat in a bathtub and collected the bubbles).

No pants came off during the episode to my recollection.

  2. The The Verge story about the redditor behind “The Fappening” is fairly weak gruel. Nowhere in the cited stuff does the guy say “I want my privacy back” or anything even similar. He’s just complained, after being asked, about the angle of the WP article, which doesn’t identify him, by the way, and for some reason compares himself to Richard Nixon.
“Privacy violater demands privacy” is a catchy headline, but it doesn’t fit the facts of the case.

  3. Wow, that “Fappening” guy really… just… really.

Why is my being on an asexuality website or an Aspergers board relevant to my work on /r/TheFappening? … I won’t be bullied into silence.

Why is Jennifer Lawrence having female pieces under her clothes relevant to her work on The Hunger Games or X-Men?
And seriously? “[M]y work,” “I won’t be bullied into silence,” does he think he’s some kind of campaigner for some fundamental human right here? C’mon, you’re just a sleazy arsehole who doesn’t understand how to search for the porn that people make freely available to you. You really haven’t done anything of merit here.

  4. I found the article on educating young men on rape very enlightening, but I do have one area of confusion:

If a couple goes on a date (where neither intend for the date to end in sex), get intoxicated (to the point where they are slurring words, stumbling, etc), then have sex, was there a rape? 2 rapes?

I totally get it if one participant is significantly more drunk than the other, but what if they are equally (or near equally) intoxicated?

I would argue the level of intoxication would need to be at the level where sex could not be initiated/completed before a level of intoxication could be considered “beyond the ability to consent”, but that is far beyond the point of “slurring words”
