Global Quickies: Governments Fail Children, Diplomatic Immunity, and Evil 3G

A suicidal refugee teen, in care of the state and pregnant from a rape, was forced to give birth even though she was entitled to have the abortion she wanted. An investigation is underway as to why she was not properly informed, did not receive the proper psychological help, and was even moved to another part of the country in the middle of all this.

UK
A report found that at least 1,400 children were subjected to appalling sexual exploitation in the town of Rotherham over a 16-year-period. There had been three previous reports about the situation of these children, one of them ignored because senior officers did not believe the data, while the other two were just ignored.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
The Vatican City’s former ambassador to the Dominican Republic has been stripped of his diplomatic immunity after being accused of sexually abusing young boys. A Vatican tribunal had defrocked when he was found guilty of abusing boys, which is the harshest sentence under church law and the first time such a high-ranking Vatican official had been sanctioned for sex abuse.

SYRIA (From Michael)
Female Kurdish soldiers, often in all-female units, are helping lead the way against ISIS. According to a female fighter quoted on the WSJ, “The jihadists don’t like fighting women, because if they’re killed by a female, they think they won’t go to heaven.”

SPAIN
A chain of bras was placed cordoning off the city hall of Valladolid after a protest calling for the resignation of the major for his sexist remarks. Making a reference to false rape accusation, the major said last week that he was sometimes scared of getting into elevators because maybe there would be a woman who would make trouble inside.

SWEDEN
A Muslim lesbian couple was married in a civil ceremony officiated by a gay imam. The couple, who is expecting their first child, is from Iran, where the punishment for lesbianism is 100 lashes. The imam, of Algerian origin, travels around the world giving lectures on homosexuality in Islam.

IRAN
A conservative cleric has issued a fatwa against 3G. The Ayatollah called 3G and broadband internet morally wrong, and said and that there needed to be standards to prevent users from dangers such as “immoral and inhumane” videos and photos.

INDIA
Police warns citizens that liking a post on Facebook which, knowingly or unknowingly, hurts religious sentiments, is a punishable by law.

GUATELMALA
Thousands of drug addicts, some of them held against their will, are being locked up for treatment and salvation in centers run by Protestant churches.
