  1. Wow, shades of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study on that last one. Were there no informed consent procedures in the 70s? (I ask because between this, Tuskegee, and the coercive sterilization of Indian women, I have to wonder…)

    1. The National Research Act in the US was passed in 1974. The actual ethical guidelines came out later as a result. Not that everyone has always followed them even now that they exist.
