Quickies: Placebos, lab-made vaginas, new Goldieblox commercial
- Placebo pills made for kids – What do you think of this? From Sarah.
- Laboratory-grown vaginas implanted in patients – The top comment has a great explanation. From Rebecca.
- Brazil’s government gives money to women because “they’re more reliable” – “The thinking here, like in other countries that offer cash transfers and microloans primarily to women, is that mothers are more likely to use the money to help their children, while men might squander the cash or skip town with it.”
- Goldieblox’s new ad buries princess culture six feet under – This is your brain on engineering!
- Cute Animal Friday! Jamie found this article about a sloth rescuer. And to keep with the theme, rescued baby badgers!
Amanda,
That Goldie Blocks commercial kind of reminded me of those “this is your brain on drugs” commercials.
At first I expected her to angrily smash the egg.
Re: the second article, don’t mind me and my overwhelming dysphoria.. I’ll just be sobbing in the corner for a bit until they do this for transwomen.
You and me both.
I’m gonna use my psychic power to predict the comment on that Brazil article:
“FEMALE PRIVELDGE!1!! FEMALE PRIVLIDGE! MISANDRY! What about hte MENZ!”
If only that were so, then I could laugh before I cry. But being the Atlantic (and lacking the heavy moderation of a Tanehisi Coates article) the comments there are full of LiberTurkey’s having conniptions about how those women are enslaving themselves to the government by accepting welfare checks.
I was going to rant about placebos for kids-that if your kid has been raised to believe a pill makes things better, you’ve done it wrong. But I am sure that I begged my kids to take whatever medication they needed by saying exactly that…
Still, I hate the candy medicine idea. A lot.
“Placebo pills made for kids – What do you think of this? From Sarah.”
Giving placebos is unethical.
