Quickies: Back flips, game shows, and gay players in the NFL
- Surya Bonaly is the biggest bad ass in Winter Olympics history – She’s the only figure skater to have landed a one-bladed back flip in competition. Not the only woman, the only person, period. And she had a damn good reason to.
- BBC TV boss: No all-male panel shows – “His comments come two months after the BBC Trust was reported to have told executives there was “no excuse” for not having more female panelists.” From Martin.
- Why the “Man’s-man game” is an insult to men – On how the NFL should get its shit together and be able to handle having openly gay players. From miserlyoldman.
- Deaf pastor signs a mighty surprise – Justin Vollmar, founder of the Virtual Deaf Church, came out as an atheist last Friday. “I’ve received hundreds of negative comments and e-mails from Christians and hundreds of positive comments and e-mails from the skeptics.” From Amberjoy.
The BBC news is welcome…I just discovered that I love panel shows (The chain went: Donna Noble on DR Who -> Catherine Tate -> Everything Catherine Tate has done that is on YouTube, including Nevermind the Buzzcocks when she demonstrated zero Dr Who knowledge in hilarious fashion -> Finding out that Richard Ayoade -also- does panel shows -> panel show addiction), except that about 20% of the humour is sexist and/or racist. As much as (some) Europeans love to say that racism is a (North) American problem, their television proves them mistaken again and again.
I love all the “Eeew! Gheys in my locker room! They might check me out!” reactions from NFL players. I just want to shout, “THEY’RE ALREADY IN YOUR LOCKER ROOM, DUDE!”
Why did I not know about Surya Bonaly before?!
