New Video! Nuns on the Run (Against Obamacare)

The Little Sisters of the Poor are one of the religiously-affiliated groups challenging Obamacare. I would like to rant for a few minutes about what a bunch of assholes they are. Enjoy.

Transcript/basic gist of the video:

Remember back in 2012, when the Vatican punished American Catholic nuns for being “radical feminists”? No, nuns weren’t donning ski masks and singing about killing sexists – no, groups like the Leadership Conference of Women Religious were working to end poverty and not saying anything about abortion and same-sex marriage. The horror!

So now there’s a new pope who says he cares about economic justice, and everything is great and the Catholic Church has left the Dark Ages behind to embrace Modern Day Morality.

HA HA HA just kidding. Nope: US nuns from the far right have simply stepped up their game to show exactly how brutally authoritarian the Catholic Church wants to be.

The Little Sisters of the Poor is a congregation of nuns who ostensibly care chiefly about helping the elderly poor, but who have recently devoted themselves to ensuring that their female employees can not access safe and affordable health care. It’s the Christian way.

If you watch Fox News, you may be under the impression that the Little Sisters have challenged the Affordable Care Act, or I’m sorry, “Obamacare,” because they are being forced to shove abortion pills down the throats of the Mother Superior while shouting “Allah Akhbar.”

In reality, the ACA has a “contraception mandate” that was created to ensure that women get adequate healthcare like contraception and cancer screenings, despite the fact that many religious people believe that they should not. The mandate allows religious organizations and religiously-affiliated organizations like the Little Sisters to not provide this coverage to women – all they have to do is sign a piece of paper saying they oppose the coverage and that they’re a nonprofit religious entity. Then the government will work with the insurance provider directly to make arrangements to protect the female employees’ health.

This is what the Little Sisters are upset about: signing a piece of paper. They object, because by signing that paper, they will give allow the government to protect the women in their employ, and they are adamant that those women should not be protected. At all. Like true Christians.

And remember, we’re not even talking about abortions, here – abortions do save women’s lives, they are sometimes medically necessary, but the contraception mandate doesn’t have anything to do with abortions. It covers things like the birth control pill, which millions of women take for a variety of reasons like regulating their cycle, easing crippling cramps and bleeding, and yes, to prevent pregnancy – not through abortion, but by preventing ovulation from even occurring.

But alas, to the Little Sisters, every unfertilized egg is sacred, which is why the nuns hold a candlelit prayer vigil for the one week each month when their menstrual cycles synch up into a bloody egg holocaust.

Just kidding, menstrual cycles don’t really sync up.

Now I know that right now, all of you in more progressive countries are rolling your eyes and thanking Thor for your single payer health care system. I know, I know – frankly, I wasn’t a fan of Obamacare back when I lived in Massachusetts and it was known as RomneyCare, but then, as now, I understood that it’s a hell of a lot better than what we had before, ie, nothing, so we have to make do.

You can tell that it’s a step in the right direction, anyway, just by how angry it makes bigoted, anti-science, morally suspect assholes like the Little Sisters. Here’s hoping the Supreme Court puts them in their place and protects their poor female employees.

  1. Growing up watching football with my Pop whenever a mediocre team would win (or a team he didn’t like) he would state, “yeah, but they were playing the Little Sisters of the Poor.” Now, I’m glad those nuns lost so many football games.
