TAIWAN
Toxicologist report on the death of a man after taking a herbal medicine commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine that contains arsenic.

INDIA
A cast council ordered the parents of a 6 year-old rape victim to marry her to the attacker’s 8 year-old son.

SUDAN
For 15 years, Amira Osman has been defying the law that makes it compulsory for women to wear headscarfs, but now she faces trial and possible flogging.

BANGLADESH
Four bloggers have been indicted for “making derogatory comments about Islam”. They could face up to 14 years in prison. The trials will begin in November.

ITALY (Via Apocalisse Laica)
A county of San Paolo Bel Sito is proposing substituting the words “mother” and “father” with “parent” in all official documents to avoid making distinctions between homosexual and heterosexual parents.

ISRAEL (From Mary)
A sorcerer was charged with sexual assault after convincing a woman who was paying him for a spell to get her boyfriend back to have sex with him in order to make the magic work.

CANADA
Four women pleaded guilty in a “ghost scam”, which consists in telling elderly Chinese women that they are being followed by ghosts and they have to have their money and jewelry blessed. The items are not returned.

  1. Sometimes I wonder if positive news on the secular/skeptical front ever comes out of the regions of East and South Asia. Not that good news ever travels that well under any circumstances and from any location. In any case, these stories are still important to me, so thank you!

    Also, Happy Mexican Independence Day … if a tad early!
