Happy 4th to all our US readers!

  • Goldieblox, the engineering toy for girls – From Felicia, who is torn about this, as am I. “Boys have strong spatial skills, which is why they love construction toys so much. Girls, on the other hand, have superior verbal skills. They love reading, stories, and characters.”
  • My new convention harassment policy – Writer John Scalzi on how he will only participate in conferences that have a strong and well-publicized harassment policy.
  • Not even cheese is safe from sexism – Regular cheese is masculine and low-fat cheese is feminine, clearly. From Mary.
  • Landmark decisions for homeopaths – In the UK, the Advertising Standards Authority has published some ajudications that are not going to make homeopaths happy. From Critical Dragon1177.

I’ve heard of that brand before, although I’ve never seen their reduced calorie variety. I probably wouldn’t have thought anything of it, if I had noticed the fact that the low fat one had a female character and the regular one had a male character.

By the way, glad you liked that article I sent you enough to post it here, however, the link to the story about that landmark decisions for homeopaths, I sent you, doesn’t exist. Sorry to have to point this out but its just plain text. You must of forgotten to post the link.

    1. Thank you! I do that pretty frequently, since I’m easily distracted by getting caught up in the articles.

  3. I think GoldieBlox are awesome, actually. That quote (about boys liking x, girls liking y) is only problematic if it is essentializing. The difference in the way boys and girls play exists, but it is a product of consistent enforcement of very strict gender roles. I think it’s brilliant that she turned it to her advantage, by taking the things most girls will already respond to and then introducing the part of building things. I hope she’s massively successful.

  4. I don’t eat low fat dairy stuff and I drink 2% milk (and occasionally I will buy whole to bake/cook with and drink whatever is left :D). I just try to minimize the AMOUNT I eat, but I won’t eat low fat. Seems pointless, to me. Plus low fat cheese is kind of gross.
