EVENT: FtBConscience and You!

Written by Ed Cara and originally posted at Skepchick Events.

The internet, bastion of perpetually morose felines, has long been an enormous boon to the atheist community.

With the number of atheist(skeptic)-centric blogs, podcasts and online discussion groups now available, it’s never been a less lonely time to be a self-identified nontheist. Sensibly enough, as the online community has grown larger, so too have the opportunities to bring us together in the real world – new conferences popping up every year.

Sadly, the analog world turns out to be mighty expensive, and as wonderful as it is to meet fellow nonbelievers or hear provocative talks on science and reason, there’s tons of people left out in the lurch due to time and money. Luckily though, the Freethought Blogs Network has decided to take that particular problem head-on with the help of the internet – announcing earlier today its inaugural, entirely free, entirely online conference: FtBConscience!

Here’s a snippet of their official announcement:

FtBCon is a free, online conference organized by the Freethought Blogs network. It will take place on July 19-21 and will focus on social justice, technology, and the future of the freethought movement. Without travel, registration, or hotel costs, FtBCon will be accessible to freethinkers around the world. Conference sessions will be held through Google+ hangouts, and attendees will have the opportunity to interact with each other in chat rooms and to submit questions to moderators.

While FtBCon might not be the first net-based conference to ever exist, they certainly do appear to be shooting for the stars with the scale of the three-day event, its speakers not only including every FtB blogger but James Croft, Rationally Speaking co-host Julia Galef, CFI’s Debbie Goddard, Skepchick’s own Rebecca Watson and obviously many more.

It’s also an event, as PZ Myers mentions, that still isn’t completely full up yet, so if you or your organization are interested in officially taking part, make sure to email PZ soon.
