American Atheist Con 2013: Dr Richard Carrier

I spent the last weekend at the American Atheist convention in Austin Texas. It was, hands down, the best secular convention I’ve been at in a long time. It was diverse, welcoming, educational and a whole heck of a lot of fun. The American Atheist event staff and members where absolutely wonderful. It’s an event I hope to be able to attend again in the future. Also, the food in Austin kicked ass. I ate all the tacos. And all the people I met were friendly. It was awesome.

In honor of all of this awesome, over the next few days I will be posting links to some of the talks from the event that I found interesting and enlightening so that you can soak in some of the AACon2013 goodness. I will also post the panel I was on, Women in Atheism when it goes live. But first up, here is Dr Richard Carrier’s talk called “Atheism… Plus What?” It’s an interesting and informative talk. He discusses the harassment that has been happening here and he talks about why we need to be cognizant of how the rest of the world views the atheist movement. It also explains how the Atheism Plus movement got started and why- and he touches on things we can do to make the Atheism community at large, bigger and better.

By the way, the talk got a very positive response at the event. Things are looking up. Enjoy.

(Momentarily NSFW for descriptions and language surrounding harassment of women.)

  1. It took me far longer than 45 minutes to watch this video. The comments section is quite illuminating, and vaguely horrifying.

  2. It is difficult to accept the argument that online harassment is ‘normal’ when it is summed up by a speaker at a conference IRL.
