  1. I absolutely loved the Ernest Adams piece. Blunt and unapologetic.

    I concur with this line.

“But this is part of gamer culture! It’s always been like this!” No, it is not. I’ve been gaming for over 40 years, and it has not always been like this. Yours is a nasty little subculture that arrived with anonymous online gaming, and we’re going to wipe it out.

I’ve been gaming for thirty years, long enough to still cringe a bit at the idea that people who just play video games are allowed to call themselves “gamers”, and if anyone acted like these WATB’s in real life at cons, actual men would have escorted them from the premises.

  2. Sometimes I feel bad that I don’t play games online (or else only with my friends), so I can’t try to help put some of these assholes in their places. But then I remember how I don’t like being called a faggot either.

  3. I loved the Call to Arms piece. Then I made the mistake of glancing through some of the comments. *sigh*

And maybe we could replace “McGyvering” with “Sunita-ing,” to mix things up a bit.

    1. There’s a Rollins quote (of unspecified origin) floating around that says, more or less, “Weak people hide behind free speech. Strong people stand in front of it.”

  4. People like Sunita Williams would be great for Mars and asteroid missions.
I hope more people can see her as inspiration.

That’s an excellent article on the call to arms.
Too bad the people that commented didn’t understand a word of what was said.
Anyway, it serves as a lesson not only to the gaming community, but life in general, especially the internet.

I say to make it happen!

  5. I think the sloth is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. Cue the streaming eyes pic!

Not the links above, but I thought this albeit basic (http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/sci-tech/2012/09/biography-vagina-naomi-wolf-mentions-brain-lot) from Neuroskeptic on Naomi Wolf’s new book and the science she cites was interesting this week, if anyone’s interested that is. I don’t know if it’s just me who is increasingly worried about pop neuroscience, but hm…

On an entirely different subject (not the place to do it, I know b-b-but *begs*), does anyone know much about the claims in porn addiction articles like this one? http://dailycloudt.com/voice/408/your-brain-on-porn-addiction-and-withdrawal I am doing a bit of non-academic research into medicalisation and have come to a halt with this one and would appreciate any pointers? Even if it’s an article. :-)

  6. I got an email the other day from the SSA a few days ago saying they had also been nominated for the Chase Community Giving award, and voted for them. I went back following the FBB link and discovered everyone can vote twice, and 3 or 4 times if they are a Chase customer (which I am), but the last bit was very confusing and I couldn’t figure out if I had gotten my extra votes or not. But I did vote for both SSA and FBB, two very worthy organizations.
