On August 20th, 1858, Charles Darwin published his theory of evolution through natural selection. Even though he had developed the theory some 20 years prior, he was famously pushed into publishing because Alfred Russel Wallace decided to publish his own theory of natural selection.

  1. The Romney quote is a joke. The Free Wood press is a satire site

“Free Wood Post is a news and political satire web publication, which may or may not use real names, often in semi-real or mostly fictitious ways. All news articles contained within FreeWoodPost.com are fiction, and presumably fake news.

Any resemblance to the truth is purely coincidental, except for all references to politicians and/or celebrities, in which case they are based on real people, but still based almost entirely in fiction.

FreeWoodPost.com is intended for a mature, sophisticated, and discerning audience.”

    1. Thanks for pointing that out, I should’ve been more diligent about reading the disclaimer of something that seemed to good to be true :) Lousy cognitive bias!

      1. Maybe there is some cognitive bias. But when you read that piece and your initial reaction is “Oh, well, wouldn’t have thought it was quite this bad.” instead of “Obviously satire.”, maybe it’s rather an indication of how ridiculous some of the positions of the Republicans are.

    2. I think Lt. Saavik summed it up, once:

“Humor. It is a difficult concept. It is not logical.”

Of course, the same can apply to politics as well. :)

  2. Coffee is awesome, but only shade-grown and multi-species crop coffee. Sun grown monocultures cause deforestation, soil erosion and species loss. A good scientist will know this.

  3. From the Football article: “”She’s a brilliant scientist who happens to be a little blonde bombshell,” says Eleanor Perfetto, widow of former offensive lineman Ralph Wenzel, whose brain tissue is currently being studied in McKee’s lab. Like McKee, Perfetto, a pharmacist who has a Ph.D. in public health and a senior position at Pfizer, knows the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated world. ”

    NOT HELPING!

  4. Mary,

I had no idea today was the one hundred fifty fourth university of the Origin of Species.

  5. Ann Romney looks quite a bit like Jan Brewer.

I wonder if they’re a match in personality as well….
