  • Ray Bradbury dies at age 91 – One of the best nerdy conversations you can get into is to ask someone if they’ve read Farenheit 451 and if so, ask them what book they’d be.
  • Fuck the patriarchy readathon – Rhys Morgan and EK McAlpine are raising money for Rape Crisis by holding a readathon of 20 books. And really how can you not donate to a fundraiser with such a great name?
  • South Korea surrenders to creationist demands – “A petition to remove references to evolution from high-school textbooks claimed victory last month after the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST) revealed that many of the publishers would produce revised editions that exclude examples of the evolution of the horse or of avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.”
  • ASUS’s sexist Twitter gaff – If you want women to support your company, don’t be sexist! Simple.

  1. I can’t see the link here. The linked pic was of a lady’s bottom next to the back of the tablet I assume?

    1. Yes, you are correct.

I am torn about the ASUS story. One of the things I do not like about the ASUS story is that people are blaming the company for what one individual did. However, I can also see why the company are ultimately responsible for what their employees do.

      1. That’s amusing – and indicative of the problem – that I could so easily imply what the image was without having even a vague description.

      2. There is a HUGE difference between some random employee making a grossly sexist comment on their own, personal, Twitter feed, and a company PR rep making the same comment on an official company Twitter feed! Both are bad, but the latter (as was the case in this situation) should deservedly cause ASUS some real PR problems. The fact that this guy saw nothing wrong with his comment tells us that the culture at ASUS (at least in the marketing department) is really screwed up.

It is absolutely correct in this scenario to blame the company for the actions of their employee!

  2. Amanda,

I think that people sometimes forgot that the battle between science and creationism, isn’t just going on in the U.S. This is a jolting reminder that, that is not the case. Maybe its not as bad in other countries as the U.S, but it seems to be a world wide problem pretty much. Regardless, Its really upsetting whenever something like this happens. Its not going to bode well for the future of education in South Korea.

I’d be willing to bet through that Creationists here in the states, are celebrating this.

  3. Amanda,

Glad to see there are still a few Bradbury fans out there. Will miss him. Martian Chronicles is my favorite. I particularly liked “There will come soft rains”.

Bradbury had the sci-fi caliber along with the greats such as Ursula Le Guin and Arthur C. Clarke.
