Skepchick Book Club: Reminder & Call for Questions

So, did you forget about the Skepchick Book Club meeting yet? What’s that, you haven’t started the book? Don’t worry, you still have plenty of time!

This is just a quick reminder to everyone that our first Skepchick Book Club thread will be on Sunday, May 20th, at 11 am EST and we’re discussing The Good News Club: The Christian Right’s Stealth Assault on America’s Children by Katherine Stewart. Come and join the party (unless you have something better to do on a Sunday morning … yeah that’s what I thought). You don’t have to read the book to participate in the thread, and if you haven’t read the book it’s at least a good place to hang out for opinions! If you’re near Boston, you’re also welcome to attend our local Book Club on May 19th. (There’s also a meetup in Houston, TX on May 12th.)

I’m posting this reminder a little earlier than I would normally because the author has agreed to participate in a Q&A on the site (and she may comment in the Book Club thread as well). If you have a question you’d like me to ask her, post it in the thread or email it through the Contact form. The deadline is May 14th.Don’t be shy, skepgeeks, I know some of you have some great questions.

  1. Is it available as an ebook somewhere like on iBooks or Kindle?

Because I don’t think any of my local bookshops are likely to have it and I do have a series of what may prove to be very boring meetings coming up in my immediate future.

    1. Yes it is on Kindle. In fact, the author recommended getting it on Kindle because it’s cheaper. (She spoke at our Skeptics in the Pub last night and was awesome.)

        1. I’ll have to think for a while… I do remember the question I asked, which was that I hadn’t noticed when the organization backing the Good News Clubs targeted Boston in 2010, and was that because the campaign had failed miserably, or because they were deliberately flying under the radar. Unfortunately, the answer is the latter.

It also occurred to me that the CEF/GNC strategy is almost the exact opposite of the cdesign proponentsists wedge strategy, since they are going for the thick end (direct introduction of religious indoctrination into the schools), but I wasn’t able to form that into a coherent question.

Josh asked a couple of good questions, but too much beer has wiped them out. I hope he’ll ask them again at book club or here.

  2. Rei – I was able to find the book at my local library. Though, I live in one county and work in another and belong to both library systems. Only one of them had it. It is available for purchase on Kindle (I checked that option first).

Can’t wait to dive into the book this weekend.

  3. I don’t live in the english-speaking part of the world and the odds of finding any english language book that isn’t a hugely well-known bestseller at a regular public library here aren’t good.

We certainly don’t have it at the library where I work although, admittedly, this is not a regular public library.

Anyway, Kindle’s fine, so thank you all for the info. I could have searched for it myself, of course, but I also asked so the info would appear along with the post for the benefit of anybody who’s as lazy as me and too shy to post. ;-)
