Support Women in Secularism

You guys! I have been so busy making stuff!

One of the projects I have been working on is a series of limited edition Surly-Ramics necklaces that will be given as gifts to people who make a donation to help support the Women in Secularism conference, May 18th- 20th. The donations will help pay for students to attend the event.

The event will take place at the Crystal City Marriott at Reagan National Airport, Washington D.C. and there is still time for you to sponsor a student or to go to the event yourself! Both actions I highly recommend.

Have I mentioned I will be there? Yep.  A lot of other amazing and inspiring women will be there too and since women are underrepresented in the secular movement we need to show our support.

From the CFI website:

This historic conference will discuss and celebrate the many contributions women have made to the secular movement, while critically examining both the successes and failures of secularism in addressing women’s concerns.

In my words:

We are gonna rise up and speak out because it is time for us to be fairly represented in this movememt and in the world at large. We can make a difference. We are important. We have rationality and critical thinking on our side and it’s time to rally against the war on women and the oppression of religious dogma.

Yeah, that’s right. I just block quoted myself in my own post. What?

So who is speaking you ask? Well, our very own Rebecca Watson will be there.  Other fantabulous speakers include; Debbie Goddard, Jennifer McCrieght, Jamila Bey, Ophelia Benson, Jennifer Michael Hecht, Greta Christina and many more.

I will have a Surly table there so if you can make it, be sure to stop by and say hello to me!

It is important that we lend our support to conferences like this groundbreaking event so that we can pave the way for future events while encouraging future leaders in the movement to stand up and be counted. I support women in secularism and I hope you will too.

  1. Thanks Amy! Also important for folks coming in from out of town: The special exclusive low CFI hotel rate expires TODAY.

  2. I’d love to go, but it’s in Washington D.C and I’m in Arizona, with little funds and fewer amounts of time off to use.

I really hope it is successful!

  3. Hey! There’s a Swedish Skepchick?! I did not know this. I see the item up in the right-hand column, advertising a debate between Christer Sturmark and Marcus Birro. I know Christer Sturmark! He published the Swedish translation of Does God Hate Women? and flew me over there for the launch. I met lots of fantastic surly women. Christer’s great. I had no idea you guys had branches.
