  • Is it cold in here? – “There’s a phrase for what Linda Henneberg is experiencing: it’s called a “chilly climate,” and it describes not just overt sexism or sexual harassment…but the myriad unconscious diminishing behaviors that seem to proliferate in any male-dominated environment, whether it be a classroom, a boardroom, an Internet chat room, World of Warcraft, or an international physics laboratory.”
  • BBC praised for science coverage – From Donnie.
  • Captain Planet set to return in live action film – From Cara, whose comment made me laugh: “Proof that we live in a totally sweet universe!”
  • Campus Crusade for Christ, now rebranded to Cru – “I know what you’re thinking: WHOA! That’s so hip! They’ve convinced me to follow Jesus! Where do I sign up?!”

      1. I cannot tell if you’re trolling or just stupid. ;-)

Fortunately, I lack anything resembling school pride… I mostly use my status as a Wildcat to make fun of people who went to KU.

        1. You mean there are TWO universities in Kansas?! Who would’ve thunk?

Okay. You caught me. I’m trolling. I actually did know there were two state universities in Kansas. I went to the good one. :-)

  1. Are they trying to pretend Christianity is a rowing team? Is this so they can say “I have Cru at 5” so people think they are athletes?

    1. Oh oh. My friend’s college roommate is the rowing coach at Kansas (or Kansas State, I don’t remember which.) Is she a closet Xian?

  2. Re: the praise of BBC science presentation. Given how skillful the BBC is at undermining the credibility of people with whom the BBC do not agree (eg. people who have anti-establishment politics, or who try to present valid evidence for something that is counter-intuitive), it should be easy for them to present climate skeptics in such a way as to show their lack of credibility.
But climate skeptics allow people to relax and not change their climate-changin’ ways, and the majority of the people who control the BBC probably prefer that.
What I’m trying to say is that their awkward attempts at “balance” aren’t so much awkward as they are ideologically motivated.

  3. I really enjoyed the “chilly climate” article, and it is as true today as it was in the 70s. The key to women’s advancement is always in large numbers. The overreaction to just one woman saying something about how being corned in an elevator by a man speaks volumes here. There are two realities, of which men, as a privileged class don’t acknowledge. The do change when the magic 50-50 mark is reached. Look at Sweden’s government– I believe women have the highest percentage of elected officials. It is about numbers women… that is really the only thing that I can see where men really will change. But it isn’t really change, it’s that their male majority or highly dominated environment changes. So get up the numbers of women skeptics and atheists at these conventions, create women only panels and discussions to build solidarity, invite selected men to attend “joint” events, and you’ll see huge progress.

  4. *sigh* Feminism often makes me feel like a putz. I want the world to be place where people’s value isn’t connected to the kind of crotch they have. But I don’t really know what to do to get there.
As to the Captain Planet one….I wasn’t allowed to watch Capt. Planet because it was part of radical environmentalist, homosexual, Jewish, elitist conspiracy, to turn Christian children away from god and make them worship the Earth goddess Gai instead. (I wish I was kidding, but I’m not. My parent’s really thought that.) Not surprisingly, I didn’t belong to Campus Crusade (which in 99 was still called CCC) because it was run by liberals and leftists. I belonged to a local pentecostal campus group instead.
