AI: On the Road Again

This weekend I am going to Iowa for the American Atheists National Convention. And I will have a Surly-Ramics table set up. Win! Do stop by and say hello if you are going to be there!

I am looking forward to Greta Christina’s talk on, Why Are Atheists So Angry? Her talk will be followed up by another talk I am really looking forward to entitled, Towards a Positive Atheism given by PZ Myers. The two talks sound like an interesting part of wonderful interconnected dialog. It’s shaping up to be a pretty enlightening weekend for a geek-girl-atheist such as myself. The convention should be pretty sweet!

But oddly enough, what I am really looking forward to most, is seeing a place I have never seen before. I have never been to Iowa and it is a random state that I have always wanted to visit. No real reason. It just sounds nice to me. I have recently returned from New York City and the contrast of going to a city like Des Moines directly after, just seems like a fabulous idea!

Are there any unusual places or random cities or places you would like to visit? Is anyone else going to the American Atheist National Convention? Does anyone know of anything I wouldn’t want to miss while in Iowa? I have heard I should check out the cornfields but I don’t think it’s the right time of year…

The Afternoon Inquisition (or AI) is a question posed to you, the Skepchick community. Look for it to appear Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 3pm ET.

  2. I haven’t been to Iowa once. It’s the only place I’ve been where my car’s grill didn’t just collect large bugs, but small birds. Eeww!

  3. I haven’t ever been to Iowa, or most of the middle states for that matter. One of these days, the husband and I are going to get an RV and spend a couple of weeks traveling this here country of ours. I’m really looking forward to it.

Have fun at the conference. Wish I could be there…

  4. I grew up in Iowa. There isn’t anything to see.

While in high school, worked with exchange students from Japan that were impressed at how you could see the horizon. Enjoy the horizon.

  5. Since Iowa is one of the few states that has legalized same-sex marriage, one of the only things I can think of to do would include a rather radical lifestyle change. ;)

Plus, telling someone to “see the cornfields” while in Iowa is like telling them to “see the mountains” while in Colorado, it’s a passive activity (is that an oxymoron?) you will see them whether you want to or not.
