AI: Birthdays

Today is my birthday. I’ll be at work, but I’m pretty much ok with that. Needless to say I would MUCH rather spend the day at home with my husband and daughter, but I’m beyond the age where I feel I need to do absolutely nothing productive on “MY” day.

Instead, I celebrated by getting my driver’s license renewed yesterday, and attending the birthday party of a coworker’s daughter. Jason made a delicious dinner last night, and I slept in this morning. All in all I’d say I’ve done exactly what I wanted to for my birthday. After work tonight, I’ll arrive home to a freshly baked cake and then Jason and I will play Nintendo Monopoly and drink wine. If all goes well, maybe my cat will refrain from biting me today. I can dream.

Who wants to sing me Happy Birthday? What kinds of things do you like to do for your birthday? Are you simple, like me? Or do you go all out and paint the town red?

  1. After a certain point, I kinda gave up on the partying…
As far as YOUR birthday goes, I can’t sing worth a damned, so I asked some friends to help me out…

  2. Today is my son’s birthday too. You guys can sing together! Well, he turned one today, so there’s really only a lot of babbling going on here. Good luck harmonizing with that.

    Happy birthday!

  3. Birthdays are a day when I feel entitled to be a little selfish. After much reflecting I came to the decision that what I want more than anything else is to have the day ignored. To me celebrating a birthday is like getting a reward for good attendance. “Congratulations on not dying. Again. Woot.”

What peeves me a little is when people ask what I want I always tell them just ignore it. Pretend I don’t have a birthday. Some people are upset by this. “You must accept a Happy Birthday. You must accept a present.” Why? If my wish on my day is to have it pass without comment shouldn’t this wish be granted?

  4. Happiest of Chelseadays to you, my love!! Man, if Jason is half the baker his mom is you’re the luckiest! :D

I love birthdays so much, especially mine, that I celebrate for the month leading up to Lizmas. Since it is two days before Christmas I have to be obnoxiously festive and excited about it to keep from being out-shined by a myth . . . and Big Santa.

  5. I sang you happy birthday but we still can’t afford a stupid camera for our stupid computer… x(

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, THOUGH! Mine is also on it’s way. I’ll not have a party or anything. Maybe one friend over for the day or something. Go downtown and possibly have some time in the house to ourselves. >:)

I hope you really enjoyed the anniversary or your 26th trip around the Sun! It’s been my pleasure to share that trip with you!

  6. @captsam: on the other hand the wife is a birthday monther.

Yes! My wife had long discussions about this and we came to the same conclusion. We’ll celebrate the hell out of her birthday, and do very little for mine. She is slowly getting comfortable with this unequal arrangement. It runs contrary to her basic instinct towards fairness and reciprocity.

  7. Happy birthday!
I think all birthdays should be like your 5th, with presents and cake and presents and friends and presents and booze (okay not exactly like your 5th) and presents.

  8. I’m rather fortunate in that my birthday is at the end of August, and in most of the UK the last Monday in August is a public holiday, so I always get a day off work around that time.

I don’t make that big of a deal of it anymore, though it’s always nice to get a present.

My wife grew up as a Jehova’s Witness, so birthday’s are a bigger thing for her as she never got to celebrate them when she was a kid.

  9. Hotel Bravo!

I’d send you a card but I noticed an uncommonly symmetrical lens flare over your address.

  10. zOMFSM did you really put a picture of your DL on the ‘net? with the number showing?

Take that shizzle down NOW, girl. You crazy?

  11. Hippo birdie two ewes!

(That works much better when I can paste silly pics.)

My birthdays these days are much like yours; as little fuss and upset as possible. Just let it slide by. The only gift I want is to be taken out to a nice restaurant for dinner on some evening nearish the day, when all the family (and our wildly differing schedules) can make it.

I used to like to treat myself with a museum visit all by my lonesome, lingering over the displays just as long as >I< wanted. Haven't done that in a while. I think I'll resurrect that next year (too late this year).

Bestest birthday evah was a weekend to a spa town with my closest girlfriend, but that was long ago and continents away. I do miss Baden Baden terribly. Sniffle.

  12. You’ve still got your full name and your date of birth showing. White out your middle name and your DoB as well.

Really, otherwise someone will come along in five years and get a credit card issued in your name and you’ll spend two years getting the bank to admit that it wasn’t really you that spent all that money on hookers and blow in Thailand….

I also prefer to have my birthday ignored and my husband feels the same way about his birthday. The forced, obligatory nature of the festivities makes me uncomfortable. I feel the same way about all holidays: Valentine’s Day, Presents Day (I mean Xmas) and the rest. My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving because I am very , very thankful and I love to eat. Oh, and Darwin Day is cool!

  14. My birthday was yesterday. I got some congratulations at work, some by SMS and a ton on facebook. I quit work a little early, made myself a nice dinner, and then vegetated online and in front of the TV.
I like throwing the occasional birthday party, but I’m bad at starting planning sufficiently early for people to not have other plans
