  • Body by Bullshit – The Read it and Weep podcast guys are testing out the methods from “The 4-Hour Body.” So far, lots of water, supplements and embarrassing post-meal squats.
  • Shamed into action – “However, meningitis still carries severe long-term effects for those unlucky enough to be unvaccinated. And they don’t just suffer from meningitis, either—they’re also targeted by the anti-vaccine movement, which questions the overall safety and efficacy of the vaccine and revives the same fears of uncertainty from yesteryear, stymieing efforts to immunize against infection.”

  1. Am I the only one who finds most of the new avatars creepy? Masala’s is okay, but the rest range from depressed-looking to psychotic. Jen’s is especially disturbing.

  2. @davew: Yep, it’s just you. I love mine. I like that the eyebrows hint at a “WTF?” reaction, which is highly appropriate for me. I think Jill did a great job.

  3. Gonna have to chime in on Dave’s side here. The new avatars are not particularly appealing. They are creative and interesting, but not my personal faves.

  4. Seven years ago one of my son’s best friends died of meningitis; it’s nasty stuff and really hard to treat if diagnosed too late.

@davew: Agreed, they don’t quite work for me as well.

  5. Funny, Shaquille O’Neal being constantly nagged by injury all season further worsening his already age-diminished ability to play should be a really good clue as to viability of Power Balance’s claims.

  6. There are no words to describe how much I love the guys from Read It and Weep. Go, go listen to them now.

However, the good people of state college probably do not love them as much. Mostly because it means a crazy laughing woman is wandering the streets listening to them.

  7. I just noticed that with the cold weather that I lost my silicone bracelet at some point. Mine worked of course. It didn’t have a cheep hologram it just said “Drew’s Army.” It is for the son of a friend that has aplastic anemia. When people asked about it it would give me a chance to talk about becoming a bone marrow donor.

now I feel better knowing you are all thinking about being donors. Thanks

  8. Too bad the Ant Farm guy died. I mean everybody has to, but he seemed like a cool old dude. (Is it too soon to make the obvious “bought the farm” pun?)

The bracelet thing…I guess I’m glad to see people calling them to task for false advertising, but I wish there was a way to do it without litigation.

  9. @Danarra: Well, you look a little sad or disappointed in your new picture. (Maybe it’s just your glasses are falling down. I always have that problem.) I loved your Neanderthal.

The new avatars take a little getting used to. My theory is the creepier and nastier looking the avatar, the nicer the person in real life. I applied that theory when picking out the dumbest-looking picture I could find of Buzz Lightyear to create my evil twin. Hope it works. Even if it doesn’t, I’m sticking with it until the Pixar copyright cops catch up with me.

  10. [farnsworth] Good news, everyone. Timothy Ferriss is not the same person as Timothy Ferris. [/farnsworth] Had me worried for a while that a legit science writer had gone off the deep end.

  11. I like the new avatars, but I also don’t remember being asked to vote on it. An avatar is someone’s personal choice, and unless I find it personally offensive, I don’t really see a reason to comment, except to insult the artist by dissing it.

“I guess I’m glad to see people calling them to task for false advertising, but I wish there was a way to do it without litigation.”

But isn’t that one of the things that litigation is actually good for?

  12. “I like the new avatars, but I also don’t remember being asked to vote on it. An avatar is someone’s personal choice, and unless I find it personally offensive, I don’t really see a reason to comment, except to insult the artist by dissing it.”

Um, yeah. This. I think they’re lovely watercolors. They’re just a different style than the previous cartoons. Jill did a great job on them.

  13. Buzz – I loved my neanderthal, too, but every once in a while ya just gots to make a change.
I picked the one I have now cause it reminded me of a mugshot.

  14. And no diss to the artist was meant. I adore many artists, and for even my most admired I like some works better than others. The new avatars aren’t my personal favorites. No slight or criticism of the artist was intended.
