From TreVelocita (second time in a week!):

Dear lord I love Stephen Fry. Come see him at TAM London in less than two weeks!

  1. Of course not. If you want to find out how real they are, accuse Buzz Aldrin of being a liar about it. ;-)

  2. Anyone who thinks the moon landings were a hoax is a f-cking idiot- there’s no other way to say it.

  3. Mythbusters episode on this was superb. Idiots should be forced to watch it and then given cups of tea and soothing pillows whilst being roundly slapped about the head.

  4. Hey Rebecca?

Should we plan a get together for all of the out-of-towner’s coming to TAM? I know we have the pub quiz but I know I would like to meet up with the people that made the effort to travel?

  5. @jimbobthomas: I like that episode, but I did notice that the first 2 items they dealt with didn’t debunk the hoax hypothesis, they demonstrated how easy those two items would be to hoax. Depends how you look at them.
The rest of it was well done, though.

  6. It’s outrageous what people can get away with thinking and disseminating as “truth.”

I’m all for freedom of thought and freedom of expression. I’m also all for throat-punching idiots who intentionally (or ignorantly) spread bad information.

Why aren’t these same idiots making a ruckus about landers on Mars? About satellites in the interstellar medium? My theory is that their brains can only handle so much bullshit before it shuts itself down out of self mercy. (Incidentally, Glenn Beck doesn’t have this mechanism installed and can spew bullshit at will.)

  7. Two points.

    1) I can’t believe I never thought of the Russian argument. Of course if anyone had reason to cast doubt on their moon landing it would be the Russians.

2.) I forgot about that Dara O’Brian bit. I wonder if he has any DVDs I can buy and watch here.

  8. @C.S.Strowbridge: Hell, the birthers still cling to their rants, despite it being pointed out to them that, were it true that Obama was born in Kenya, the GOP would have ferreted it out and used it.

  9. The book Packing for Mars has a terrific section on the engineering that went into getting the flag to the moon and making sure it would “wave” in the photograph. (Not only did they have to make sure it would take a good photo, but it had to be foldable enough to fit easily in the module AND unfoldable enough that the astronauts could assemble it wearing spacesuits. As usual, the real story is much cooler than the conspiracy version.)
