Vaccine Clinic Poster Art

I am on a plane headed toward Atlanta for fun and festivities.

Wow. You all look like little ants from up here!
I’m sorry.
Wait.
I’m on my way to Atlanta.
I better rephrase that.
Y’all
look like little ants from up here!
That’s better!

I’m really looking forward to Atlanta! There is going to be the Star Party, a LIVE Skepchick podcast at Dragon*Con, the TDaP booster clinic AND I will be manning the Skepchick fan table where I will have lots of Surlies for sale. Did I mention that a percentage of Surly sales will be donated to the Women Thinking Free Foundation to help fund more vaccine clinics? Did I mention Bill Corbett and Scott Sigler are our guests on the live podcast? Did I tell you that you look nice today? Yep, it’s all true. So do stop by, say hello and spend some time with the Skepchicks in Atlanta!

Until then here is another fabulous poster we created for the booster clinic!

Pertussis Report 8/31/2010 (transcription of downloaded PDF)

To date (8/31/2010), there have been 3,600 confirmed, probable and suspect cases of pertussis reported in 2010 for a state rate of 9.2 cases/100,000. This is a 7-fold increase from the number of reported cases during the same time period in 2009 when 501 cases were reported (Figure 1).

This is the most cases reported in 52 years since there were 3,837 cases reported in 1958 and the highest incidence since there were 9.3 cases/100,000 in 1963. Previously, the peak was in 2005 when there were 3,182 cases reported (Figure 2).

177 (12%) cases have been hospitalized (of the 1,442 cases with known hospitalization information). 106 (60%) of hospitalized cases were infants <3 months of age and 132 (75%) were infants <6 months of age.

8 deaths have been reported, 7 were in infants <2 months of age at time of disease onset and had not received any doses of pertussis-containing vaccine. One was an ex- 28 week preemie that was 2 months of age and had received the first dose of DTaP 11 days prior to disease onset. The majority of infant cases in 2010 have occurred in infants <3 months of age. The median case rate by county is 7.7 cases per 100,000 (range 0-121) (Table 1).

Rates are highest in infants <6 months of age (168 cases/100,000), in adolescents aged 7-9 years (28 cases/100,000) and 10-18 years (21 cases/100,000) (Figure 3).

Overall rates by race/ethnicity are highest in whites (7.7/100,000), however age- specific rates indicate that the highest rates are seen in Hispanic infants <6 months of age (199/100,000) (Table 2).

  2. Has anyone done any work to get behind the numbers? Why is the infection rate of Hispanic children <6months 20x that of white kids?

Will the vaccination of educated white people make any difference to those numbers?
