Afternoon Inquisition

AI: Recommend Some Skeptical A/V

Karen is your usual Sunday Afternoon Inquisitor, but today she’s busy enjoying a mind-blowing sex-a-thon the likes of which have never been seen outside a Penthouse Forum-writer’s sordid imagination. So I took over!

You know that we Skepchicks put out videos on this YouTube channel and of course you also know we broadcast Curiosity Aroused and the Skepchick podcast. Oh yeah, and I have that Skeptics’ Guide to the Universe gig going on still.

But what other podcasts or vodcasts or YouTube channels do you subscribe to in order to get your skeptic fix?

The Afternoon Inquisition (or AI) is a question posed to you, the Skepchick community. Look for it to appear Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 3pm ET.

  3. I don’t listen to whole lot of “skeptical” podcasts (I find them to be generally redundant to reading that I do), but I do enjoy several that are of interest to skeptics:

    Nova Science Now
My History Can Beat up Your Politics
    Scientific American’s 60 Second Science
    Radiolab
    Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History

  4. Funny you should mention it, as I just [WARNING: blatant blogwhoring ahead] wrote a blog post on this very topic a few days ago.

I think Righteous Indignation is near the top of my favorite podcasts. Plus, the Conspiracy Skeptic, Skeptics with a K, and Token Skeptic.

On YouTube, you simply cannot go wrong with QualiaSoup’s videos. Invariably spot-on.

  6. In addition to many of the above (just found Conspiracy Skeptic due to the interview with Michael Marshall of the Merseyside Skeptics):

    Podcast Beyond Belief (for parents)

NPR’s Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me (the host has been interviewed on Skepticality)

Quackcast and Gobbet o’ Pus (the world needs more Mark Crislip)

Skeptically Speaking (radio show in Alberta, Canada)

    Little Atoms

… not terribly prolific but fun (all Australian):

    Nonsense Podcast

    Cosmic Tea Party

The Skeptic’s Field Guide to Humbug

    Young Australian Skeptics

    … some science podcasts:

Are We Alone? (the SETI folks)

    NPR’s Science Friday

    The Naked Scientist

    Nature

This Week in Virology (and the companion “This Week in Parasitism”)

  8. Well, I have mostly science and skeptic podcasts, with a few others thrown in for good measure…
alphabetically; Astronomy Cast, Common Sense w/ Dan Carlin, Hardcore History w/ Dan Carlin, Little Atoms, Pal Cast, Point of Inquiry, QuackCast, SGU, Skeptoid, and uh..Tiki Bar TV.

  9. Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History is a great podcast, but I’m not certain I’d catagorize it as related to skepticism. Science? Yes. History? I don’t think so, but it is EXCELLENT.

Interestingly, even though George Hrab is revered in the skeptical world, and though I like the weird, the wacky, and the irreverant, I can’t get through but a few minutes of his podcast even though I’ve tried to come back to it multiple times. Stranger still I really enjoy his talent when I’ve seen him in person. Oh well … can’t please everyone all of the time … unless you’re in a cult.

  10. @Halincouh: I would argue that it is relevant to skepticism because, while psuedoscience gets the lion’s share of attention, psuedohistory can be equally pernicious in some ways, and a show that gets into the nitty-gritty of some hsitorical topic should be relevant to a skeptic’s media diet.

  11. Righteous Indignation
    Irreligiosophy
    The Conspiracy Skeptic
    Monster Talk
    Little Atoms
    Mr Deity
    Sundays Supplement
    The Amatuer Scientist Podcast
    Savage Love (for the rants)
More or Less (BBC Radio 4 show about the truth behind statistics – debunked the whole Muslim population growth bullshit beloved of the far right in Europe)
Science in Action (BBC World Service)
    Skeptoid
    Captain Disillusion (Youtube)
    Edward Current (Youtube)

I also heartily recommend (not because they’re Skpetical, just because they’re good):
    History:
    The History of Rome
    Norman Centuries
    12 Byzantine Rulers

    Humour:
    The Collings & Herrin Podcasts
    Precious Little
    Answer Me This
    The Perfect Ten

  12. On Youtube I follow CaptainDisillusion and HealthyAddict. After their recent collaboration I’m now also checking out ZOMGitsCriss and all the other girls who contributed to see if I should subscribe (so far, it’s looking like I should).

  13. @Appleman: I’m glad someone else listens to More or Less – I sometimes think statistics are often overlooked by the skeptical movement, and that show, whilst not specifically a skeptical podcast, fills a gap in the market. The stuff they did over the election, examining all the statistical claims by various candidates, was fantastic.

  14. Generally, Thunderfoot (who I subscribed to after watching the “Why do people laugh at Creationists” series), and a few things linked off of his channel. I generally hate streaming video and have no patience for podcasts.

  15. Thanks for the suggestions, guys! Many of them have been added to my List of Things I Will Never Have Time to Watch/Read/Listen To. :P

You win. I agree. I don’t know why I disagreed in the first place as I am a part time history geek.
