Having been exposed to plate heat exchangers by holiday work in the 1980s, I started seeing plate heat exchanger plates all over the place in British SF shows. It seems the set designers have a long history of looking for interesting real life objects and turning them into a bit of set.
Plate heat exchanger plates are generally rectangular with interesting corrigations, and are handy as wall panels on space stations etc.
