Skeptical Parenting! Help is here!

I heard you all complaining that there are not enough podcasts out there to fill your time. Even though my headphones were on and I was listening to something else, I totally heard you! So I teamed up with some of the good parents around the internet and partnered up with the Foundation Beyond Belief and launched a new parenting podcast for skeptical/secular parents. (I may or may not have spun that in a way that made it sound like I was far more influential than I actually was in launching the project).

So if you like parenting (or you don’t but you’re doing it anyway) and you like skepticism and you like not taking your family to church (or you hate taking your family to church but you’re doing it anyway) you need to check out the new Podcast Beyond Belief starring the Science Based Parenting dads as Ward, Rational Moms‘ Laurie Tarr as June, She Thought‘s Heidi Anderson as Wally, and Elyse Anders (that’s me!) as The Beaver.

Episode one is now available for download at the FBB website, via our RSS feed or directly through iTunes! Download it to hear me talk about things! Parenty things! And listen to us interview Dale McGowan about the Foundation Beyond Belief and secular humanism.

Then, if you like what you hear, next week, we’ll ship you our second episode, with Colin’s exclusive* interview with rock star John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants, FREE OF CHARGE!

That’s not one skeptical and secular based parenting podcast! That’s two! Including our exclusive* interview with Colin and Super Famous Rock Star® John Flansburgh of TMBG! And they’re both absolutely free while supplies last! These podcasts won’t be around forever**, so subscribe now!

Then give us a sweet rating on iTunes. Because why wouldn’t you? It’s a sweet podcast! With rock stars!

And, if you get a friend to subscribe now, as a thank you, I’ll make you this offer: If you have a parenting question, send it to podcastbeyondbelief[at]gmail[dot]com and we’ll try to get it answered by a real professional expert! In a segment we’re calling “The FAQ”! Just for you! Your questions! Expert answers!

Seriously. Listen to our podcast. It’s good… and skeptic parents have been begging for something like this for a long time. And even with me on it, it’s clean –  totally safe for work… seriously! You could listen to it at your grandmother’s house on a Sunday afternoon.

*We are the only podcast featuring both Colin from Science Based Parenting and John Flansburgh from TMBG.
** They’ll probably be around for pretty close to forever, though.

  1. Elyse, the Scoutgrrrl and I don’t have kids yet. Does this mean we can’t listen to your spiffy new podcast? Should we get busy before Lost comes on, wait 9 months and then start to listen? Help me Obi-Lyse Kenobi.

  2. I’m listening to it! I find podcasts a little weird. I feel like I should be looking at the person talking, but I can’t because it’s a recording (I have the same problem with phones).

I totally laughed at the start though, I never heard that girls weren’t supposed to be as good as boys in maths until I was about 25. It was too late then. If no one ever tells you that, you just go ahead and be good at maths.

  3. I’m totally introducing you as “the beaver” on the next podcast! That was brilliant!

  4. Cool! We are expecting to have are first daughter mid June. I read the parenting beyond belief book and my wife is reading it now. We are still debating how we will handle some topics and it will be nice to see how other people are doing it.

  5. THANKS! I’m always looking for a new podcast to listen to at work so I don’t have to listen to my two crazy Christian co-workers blather on about Jesus.

  6. not a parent, but I’ll probably tune in next week for the interview with the Flans. Good call on that one!

  7. Hooray! Thanks for this. Can’t wait to hear the John Flansburgh interview. Science Is Real by TMBG is potentially the greatest childrens’ album EVER. My daughter loves to dance around to “Meet the Elements.” Baby geeks are cool.

  8. Wow, can’t wait to d/l this tonight, though I assume skeptic parents are already on board with vaccines… but I’m sure future episodes will hit issues we struggle with as skeptics, atheists, etc.

Really looking forward to the TMBG show also. My kid and I are both big fans. We played the Science album every morning for months after we got it.

  9. I finally had a chance to listen! Awesome! Targeting parents for woo-reeducation and rational tactical support can have a profound impact on the culture.

Elyse–sorry, slightly OT, but you may have (or will with the birth of the Skepgirl) experienced the evangelism of cloth diapering proponents. I engaged in a non-random, totally subjective unscientific trial of cloth diapers. I tried to find out if cloth diaper actually are better for the environment, and if use of cloth would give me a social boost in the intense parenting culture I peripherally engage in. Here are the mishaps: http://open.salon.com/blog/anthropologist_underground/2010/01/18/a_woman_of_the_cloth_or_not_ii, and the results: http://open.salon.com/blog/anthropologist_underground/2010/03/07/becoming_a_woman_of_the_cloth

  10. I’m so please to hear you guys are doing something like this! Just subscribed via iTunes and can’t wait to give it a listen.
