Skepticism

The Gospel Of Luke

I will admit it. I was never a fan of Luke Perry. Beverly Hills 90210 irritated the crap outa me and therefor Luke Perry annoyed the crap outa me. I never gave it a second thought until a few days ago when suddenly Luke Perry became AWESOME. Luke Perry And in case you haven’t heard what he said I thought I would share!

Luke recently had a guest star role on the television show, Leverage where he plays a psychic con artist. When asked in an interview by the New York Post what appealed to him about this role he said:

I’m drawn to these modern day charlatans — because I’m skeptical. I don’t see how these guys keep doing this. It blows my mind every time I think about it — from the tarot card reader in the corner or the guys with big worldwide audiences.

When directly asked if he believed in psychic powers he said:

“No I don’t”.

When asked if he had any insight into how psychics pull it off he said:

I had a pretty good idea how they do what they do. What I loved is that the script built in all the right things about how they cold read people. Don’t get me wrong, these “psychics” aren’t stupid by any stretch of the imagination — quite the contrary. They’re often very charismatic, intelligent people who get you to believe what they want you to believe. Or in this case, figuring out what you’re looking to believe.

This might not be a HUGE big deal, but while Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey are calling England’s Medical Council a “kangaroo court where public health officials in the pocket of vaccine makers served as judge and jury.” and claiming we skeptics and science writers and pretty much anyone who is pro-vaccine are all part of a “well-orchestrated smear campaign”. It’s just nice to know that some of my Hollywood neighbors are speaking some sense.

Thanks Luke, you’re awesome and we’re proud to have you as a skeptic!

  1. zomg! Dylan, a skeptic? Surprising. I guess you might say it gives him a certain perky lure. I’ll just get my coat.

  2. Luke is scheduled to be a guest at Dragon*Con this year. I wonder if he’d be interested in participating in a Skeptrack panel (which would certainly draw the attention of many non-skeptic convention attendees)…

  3. You should get him on SGU so Rebecca can go all Tiger Beat on him. Ask him his favorite color!

  4. I do not know who he is, nor what “Leverage” is, but you are right, Amy, it’s always good to welcome a celebrity to the side of reason. Far too many believe that their privileged status lets them endorse any woo they want.

    Welcome aboard, Luke.

  5. Totally sending out the love!!!! Love Luke Perry. Love Leverage. Love Skepchick. How often is anything a total win? YAY!!!!!!
