Tim Minchin’s Storm, that is. Given the YouTube audio has had over 250,000 views, I’m assuming many of you are already familiar with what’s become somewhat of a skeptic anthem. The fabulous news (if you haven’t heard already), is that Storm is currently being made into an animation, produced by yours truly (see, bias declared up front). The Storm movie team is small, comprising just Tim, me, DC Turner and Fraser Davidson, so although the poem is just nine minutes long we’re already 12 months into production with many more to go. It has a brand new vocal track and live music specially recorded at the Royal Academy of Music in London. The final animation will be released later this year, but today I am very excited to reveal the trailer:

Holy crap, that’s great. Can you tell us which programs you’re using? I’m assuming AfterEffects or Flash. I took a look at a look at some vids on Turner’s site, and at first I thought it was Flash, but then I saw some palettes I didn’t think were available in Flash, so then I thought Illustrator, but I wasn’t aware that you could use a timeline in Illustrator…maybe it’s something I’ve never used. Definitely Adobe though. (I’m sure you’re using multiple programs, of course.)
This sort of stuff really inspires me to make my own design work even better, but also reminds me of how poor my own stuff is in comparison. :/

@Bevans – You’re quite right, it’s adobe all the way. Animated stuff drawn frame-by-frame in Flash, static stuff made inPhotoshop, then the pixie dust gets sprinkled on by After Effects.
Um… Haven’t I seen that before? Oh, right, I have. :)

I saw it on Facebook earlier and immediately reposted. I’ve loved this poem ever since I found it and can’t wait until the movie is finished.
What sort of release will it get?
@TD: The release depends on which film festivals and awards we get accepted for, as some place restrictions on entry based on exclusivity. But that just affects the timing, the finished 9 minute animation will be free to view on YouTube at some point later this year, and hopefully also as an extra on Tim’s next DVD in November.
We’re also likely to have it as an iTunes download for a small fee to help cover our costs, but as long as it’s on YouTube then I’m comfortable that people can watch it for free – if they choose to purchase a download as well then that’ll help with our costs, but this is a not-for-profit project.
There’ll be a swanky premiere in London when it’s finished which limited tickets will be available for – I’ll be giving away a pair of tickets here on Skepchick in a competition.
Other than there’ll be very limited opportunities to see it on the big screen, most of those will be whichever festivals it gets accepted too. The one I’m really hoping for is Sundance, but we’ll see! We have to finish the thing first :D
