  1. @Bevans: It’s Never Mind the Bollocks (EDIT: BUZZCOCKS! I MEAN BUZZCOCKS!), a funny panel show that is usually about music but took on a special Doctor Who theme for this episode since Tennant was hosting.

  2. Aw come on, a subtitle? Could those who don’t understand a Scottish accent not just listen harder? He is speaking English, you know.

I’m not saying this is an American issue, by the way. Strong Indian or Pakistani accents on BBC TV are subtitled. It drives me nuts.

I don’t know David Tenant so I didn’t know what accent he had. It’s difficult to pick up the accent and the vocabulary in just a few words.

In the larger scheme of things, I watch a lot of British entertainment and Scottish and northern English accents are the most difficult to decipher. I have to watch _Shameless_ with subtitles. Irish accents are pretty easy to understand until you start getting out onto the islands. Then I would swear it wasn’t English at all.

  4. I had a lot of trouble understanding him until I remembered he’s Scottish, then it suddenly made sense. It wasn’t so much that he was hard to understand; it was more that I was listening in the wrong accent.

  5. this drives me crazy – to an astrology buff, anything you do is ‘typical’ of your sign, they sagely tell you. is wanting to punch astrology nuts typical aries? because my birthday is march 28 and i’m getting visions of my fist rising in the house of your face…

  6. My mother lives in Yorkshire, and I love the accents there. (Especially the kids, they’re so adorable). At the same time, my college had an exchange student from London, and I couldn’t even understand her when she said her name. Natalie

  7. I’d go gay for Mr. Tennant.

Also, this American had no trouble with the accents…Yeah, it bugs me when they put subtitles just because a person has a heavy accent. But that’s just me – I guess if it helps other folk understand it, I’m all for it.

  8. My mother reminded of an old quote: “We are two countries divided by a single language.” Usually attributed at Winston Churchill, though apparently that’s been questioned.
