Challenging Claims of the Paranormal in Houston
Hey, Houston area Skepchickers, put this on your calendar:
Jeff Wagg, the Communication and Outreach Manager of the James Randi Educational Foundation, will be in Houston to address the Greater Houston Skeptics Society on the evening of September 22, 2009, at the Central branch of the Houston Public Library.
His talk will explore the pros and cons of offering monetary “challenges” to those who claim to have paranormal or supernatural abilities. He will regale attendees with stories of his experiences with the JREF’s $1,000,000 Psychic Challenge, and will touch upon the many other challenges out there, as well, including the pseudo-challenges sometimes offered by paranormal groups.
Jeff’s presentation will start at 7:00 p.m., but the room, which is on the 4th floor of the library, will be available from 6:00 p.m. They tell me you are allowed to bring outside food and drinks, though only of the non-alcoholic variety. Don’t despair, however, as there’s been talk of post-presentation cocktails (location TBD).
So scrub your pits, put on a clean shirt, and come out and hang with Jeff Wagg and the Houston area skeptics for a night.
