Ode to Skepchick (or Illustration of a Bear Security System That Kills People in the Face) Contest

So, as you all probably have noticed, the last couple of weeks have been a little rough on the Skepchicks. Most recently, our fearless leader had been hit by a car and then robbed (thankfully, not in the same day, but still…suck-o-rama!). Other things have been kicking the Skepchicks in the ass, so needless to say, we could use some cheering up. That’s where this month’s contest comes in!

ODE TO SKEPCHICK

Contest Rules:

  1. Create a drawing, illustration, comic etc in MS Paint (or equivalent if you are using a Mac or use Linux) that shows your love for this awesome blog and the contributors that you cherish.
  2. Entries must be in by Easter Sunday (April 12), 11:59PM UTC/GMT
  3. Post entries in the comments, via linkage from Flickr, Photobucket etc.

Once all the entries are in, Elyse and I will judge the entries with our judging equipment. The winner will obviously get mucho praise and affection, along with a prize.

The prize for this contest was thought up by Elyse and I think it is awesome. Whoever wins will receive a book from either Elyse’s or my library. The book will remain a secret until the winner receives it.

Good luck! We can’t wait to see the entries!

  1. Why does it need to be in MS Paint? I could do something much radder in photoshop or painter.

  2. Though this isn’t exactly a painting, I did think that this would be a good training video for the “bear that would kill you in the face” especially at the end

  3. @lukeradl: Well that wouldn’t be fair to us non-artistic people! :)

And also I think it’s because Rebecca is sending Paint drawings to everyone who contributed to her burgled-laptop-fund.

  4. So what about all those mac and linux users out there who don’t have MS Paint? I’m fairly certain there are Linux equivalents but don’t know enough about what a Mac has and if it has something as low end and simple as MS Paint for doing this competition. Figured I’d ask.

  5. I chose to make a very symbolic display of my love of the Skepchicks.

Here you see the Skepchicks personified in the pirate on the left, slaying the anti-vaxxers, true believers, conspiracy theorists, and other such folks, personified in the pirate on the right. In this case, being slain is symbolized by wearing a red bandana. Note the skull and crossbones on the hat. It’s simply a circle and lines, as stick figures don’t have skull shaped heads or bone shaped legs.

  6. Am I the only one to notice that this whole contest is unfairly biased toward those who are witty, talented, expressive and have a reason to live?

Well, gotta get back to my string collection ( I collect string, ya no).

Good luck all. I can’t wait to see the entries.

  7. @mrsepp: Thanks! Will try that. I was thinking the same thing as killysaur. Can the contest me amended to say MS Paint or equivalent? We latte sipping, turtleneck wearing Mac snobs want to join in the fun. ;-)

  8. @Nicole: Hahaha, yes I will add “or equivalent” to the contest rules. I honestly didn’t mean to make things harder for the Mac users (being one myself, but I use different programs for digital art).

  9. Entry:

btw: could someone please comment to my post with a link for me to contribute to the new laptop fund for our fearless leader. I lost the feed in google reader. Mark = teh n00b.

If the new PC is already purchased consider my forthcoming donation to be beer money, which I expect to be repaid by Rebbecca at the next TAM :P

Alternatively: help at organizing a skeptics in the pub in Raleigh NC will suffice.

  10. Im a graphic artist by trade and as such have to recuse myself from this most illustrious event. Besides, I’m too stupid to come up with an idea clever enough to compete with the brilliance of most of the fine folks who post here.
I bet the entries are gonna to be a hoot. I can’t wait :)

  11. @Elyse:

Actually, over the few short, stolen hours we’ve spent together, I feel MS Paint and I have developed a close bond.

Perhaps it’s just early relationship optimism, but this could be the start of a beautiful friendship.
