Going to TAM 7? Want to Hang with the Skepchicks?

Registration for The Amaz!ng Meeting 7 is open, and many of your fave Skepchicks will be there. The conference is July 9–12, and is sure to be a good time since so many fun people will be mashed all in together, including James Randi, Phil Plait, Adam Savage, Harriet Hall, and Jennifer Ouellette.

Once again, we’ll be throwing a Skepchick party. Previously, we’ve booked larger and larger suites in an attempt to meet demand. This year, we’ve taken it to the next logical step – we’ve rented a villa.

That’s right, a villa. There is a pool, a hot tub, a theater, and enough room for people to spread out and enjoy themselves without annoying the neighbors. It is in a residential neighborhood, so we’re going to be stricter about who is invited and who gets to hang around (for instance, if you’re annoying us and/or causing trouble, we will kick you out like the cold, cold bitches we are).

For that reason, this year there is a guest list. To get on it, all you have to do is read this evite and RSVP with your full name and that of any guests. Your name won’t be visible to anyone but us, and we’ll need it to make sure you’re not a crazy person.

The party will be Saturday night. The day before, we’ll email the exact location of the villa to everyone on the evite list and include info on how you can maybe catch a ride on our courtesy shuttle van. The villa is a few miles from the hotel, which is only a couple of bucks for a cab if you miss the van. We ask that those of you who do receive the address not share it with anyone but the guest(s) you bring. It’s important to us that we keep the crowd manageable.

So, who’s ready to rock out?

  1. Would love to go, but I decided I could only afford either braces or tam, and the braces won out.

  2. I really wish I could afford TAM. And/or a flight and hotel room in Vegas. And/or just a flight and a couch at La Villa Skepchicka for the party. We’ll have to see which, if any, of these scenarios play out.

  3. can. not. wait. srsly.

And people, come on now. This will be a pretty solid collection of the Skepchicks (and SkepSam) all in on place. Normally this only happens in the Skepchick Lounge, which is not available to the unwashed masses.

    Don’t miss it.

  4. Hmmm, maybe this will be the tipping point that convinces my husband that we can afford TAM…

  5. Way cool, great plan! Last years low oxygen sauna party was interesting so I applaud all who came up with this plan! I hope I can swing getting to TAM this year.

  6. @Expatria: Indeed, I should make clear that one does not have to necessarily register for the conference to come to the party, though one should be, at a minimum, a skeptical sort, and those who are not Close Personal Friends of Skepchick will want to arrange lodging somewhere nearby.

  7. Ill be more than happy to go :p This will be my first TAM so it will be nice to hang out with some people that are going.

  8. Unfortunately, I have a personal policy against meeting people from the internet.

Not really, I just can’t go.

  9. @Sam Ogden:

I couldn’t go to the Villa because I’d just be kow-towing the whole time and repeating “We’re not worthy! We’re not worthy!”

And I bet when y’all tell people about the villa, they can only say “No way!”, to which you all must reply “WAY!”

  10. Rebecca is begging me to attend, so I’ll be at the top of the guest list. I’ll bring some of my peeps.

  11. Being that I am known in the world of cheap as El Cheapo….I thought I would pass along this: Booking through Hotel.com is MUCHO cheaper than directly through casino. Total for three nights is 222.42. You can also do this through any of the other discount sites but this one doesn’t charge 25.00 for change or cancellation which I think is awesome.

  12. Being a poor college student and all…going to TAM means skipping out on DefCon..argh…decisions decisions….argh…

    *head explodes*

  13. Let me sum up DefCon. Your internet is not safe. RFID passports are (still) a terrible idea. Regular use of unix and regular use of soap share an inverse relationship. Your internet is still not safe.

There, now you can go to TAM.

  14. I USE UNIX (Gentoo counts, amirite?) REGULARLY AND I WASH BEHIND MY EARS AND ALL! :)

Speaking of Defcon, I went last year and it was aweso-

Ok, I should go to TAM.

  15. Hmmm. The prospect of flying out for the party alone and flying back the next day grows increasingly appealing. Particularly because most of the stuff to do in Vegas kind of, well, blows.

  16. My schedule is too up in the air to know if I can make TAM this time, so I won’t apply yet.

bug_girl: I didn’t know you were the type. Since I’d probably drive, I can bring a toy or two. But the indoor ranges get annoyed when I show up with my Civil War musket. The first shot obscures all the targets.

  17. This is my first time going to TAM! I reserved my hotel room yesterday and now there’s this awesome-sounding party to go to??? Life is good!

The only way it could be bettter is if you tell me the party has a Dr Horrible theme….

  18. I enjoyed hanging with some of you when you came to Pittsburgh. I hope that I will have to chance hang out again and meet the rest of you.

  19. Being a new skeptic, I’m afraid with the kids and my prior obligations I won’t make it this year….money and all

  20. The wife and I will be there again this year. We are registering today. Looking forward to seeing everyone again. Let’s hope the party will last longer this year! Last year’s was too short!

  21. @Rebecca: I am too on the guest list!!!! Remember, you called me yesterday and begged me to come!

  22. Holly crap! I guess I need to guess my ass in gear and plan a trip to TAM 7 then. I’m just a bit intimidated by the thought of going to Vegas on my own… but I suppose I’m a grown man and everything.

  23. What about people who won’t have and/or can’t afford to pay for internet access at the hotel? Is there another way we could get informed of the location?

  24. Perhaps slightly unrelated, but has there been any news about CONvergence? I’ve been procrastinating a bit on booking a hotel room, but I was hoping to share a room and couldn’t find out how to get in touch with other attendees. There didn’t appear to be a thread on the JREF forum about it.

  25. Can’t wait to run the gaunlet for this party. The amount of skeptical wit per cubic meter will be approaching critical levels. If only we could store it for export, perhaps in some sort of carbonated beverage….
