  1. “A Saudi student’s campaign to allow women to staff lingerie shops” leaves me with one question… why don’t the husbands accompany their wives to prevent them from interacting with a strange man? After all, they have to be married to have sex, so one assumes that lingerie is only for married people, and only to be seen by the husband… jeebus cripes, the mind reels :)

  2. Lingerie, “snake monsters,” hardened nipples, and saucy lyrics… Is today Friday?

    re: naughty music

    1. I smell a causation/correlation fallacy.

    2. What?! No suggested tracks for a seductive sexytime playlist? How disappointing.

  3. I love it when this happens.
Headline: Music linked to teen sex habits
Fourth sentence: But experts said it was too simplistic to link music directly to behaviour.

In other news, everybody is invited to my house for a “music with explicit and aggressive sexual phrases” listening party.

  4. If may I, some things (or authors) I find *very* difficult to read. The “Erasing human fears…” article is one of those. I can’t follow what the article is saying.

    Just wanted to say.

  5. In re: music makes us too horny to control ourselves-

Is there some rule that we have to go through this with each and every generation? I seem to remember that listening to Black Sabbath was supposed to cause me to indiscriminately impregnate every female of any species within 50 yards. My mother remembers how listening to Helen Ready was making her a wanton woman without morals.

Like the saying goes, “Those who do not attend to history are fracking idiots”.

  6. Sprites are a good possibility for some UFOs, but not all. The matter is complex, but alien spacecraft are definitely NOT the correct answer. :-) See my post at the UFO Sightings on Yedda for more info.

  7. That is one big snake, and to think all these years something the size of a dinosaur evading being captured on camera until now. Shy?

“God created the sun, the stars, the heavens and the earth, and then made Adam and Eve. The Bible never says anything about dinosaurs. You can’t say there were dinosaurs when you never saw them. Somebody actually saw Adam and Eve. No one ever saw a Tyrannosaurus rex.”

  8. @marilove: And let us not forget the Beatles, of course!

I swear. This and the “sexting” bullshit. *eye roll*

I wonder what the next “OH MY GAWD KIDS THINK ABOUT SEX!” article will be about?

  9. @marilove: I wonder what the next “OH MY GAWD KIDS THINK ABOUT SEX!” article will be about?

You’ve hit on the underlying fallacy. For some reason, a certain group of adults cannot believe that kids naturally think about sex. “Why little Timmy thinks girls are icky! If he is thinking about boobies than someone must be putting these horrid ideas in his head! Is it aliens? Government mind control? Spanish fly in the drinking water? Subliminal messages in music?”

How about this: maybe Timmy – along with almost everyone else – is feeling that old genetic imperative pushing up against his zipper. Maybe…just maybe…being horny is part of being human.

  10. @Soresport:
“And lo Jesus and the disciples walked to Nazareth. But the trail was blocked by a giant brontosaurus…with a splinter in his paw. And O the disciples did run a shriekin’: ‘What a big fucking lizard, Lord!’ But Jesus was unafraid and he took the splinter from the brontosaurus’s paw and the big lizard became his friend.”

On the topic of sex…I still remember the shock of discovering my grandparents and great-grandparents were very fond of pre-marital sex. (Of course this information came from the same grandmother who bought me my first g-string at the age of 16. ) I guess it shouldn’t be surprising that my grandparents did the humpty in the back of a Studebaker considering the overt sexual power Benny Goodman and his pronographic orchestra.

  11. @Ashley.Ele: Ok, I’m blaming my imaginary executive assistant for those spelling/grammatical mistakes. She has been summarily sacked.

    should have read:
I guess it shouldn’t be surprising that my grandparents did the humpty in the back of a Studebaker considering the overt sexual power of Benny Goodman and his pornographic orchestra.

  12. @Ashley.Ele: Too bad it wasn’t a giant fucking tyrannosaurus. The preaching would have ended in a large burp.

  13. @James Fox:

Yeah, it’s in the bible somewhere, Leviticus I think: “Lo, and take thee not into thy mouths that which crawls upon its belly or emerges one-eyed from trousers, for it is ABOMINATION unto thee”

  14. @Ashley.Ele: well, pronographic is only a misspelling if we are refering to it in the non-internet world. Pron is perfectly acceptable on teh intert00bs.

@darwinfan: after reading PZ’s blog post blasting futurists talking about human evolution, I’m less than enthusiastic. I’m personally still waiting till they release James Randi’s TED talk. Until then there’s this. I especially like the last half about the video games.

  15. From the suggestive music article, I can definitively say that Pittsburgh University doesn’t exist. The University of Pittsburgh on the other hand……

It’s the small details that make me stop reading an article after less than five seconds.

  16. @killyosaur42: Being a B.Sc. in Biology, I suppose I automatically took the dramatic conclusion with a grain of salt. The technology that we have though, is really fascinating to me. I am very enthusiastic about what technology is empowering us to do.

  17. @killyosaur42: pronographic is only a misspelling if we are referring to it in the non-internet world

On the other hand, “prawn-ography” is prohibited in almost* every state.

*Maine has a very permissive attitude when it comes to sexy sea creatures.

  18. Did anyone notice that their definition of sexually degrading was anything that “described sex as a physical rather than loving act “. I’m sure there are plenty of sexually degrading songs out there but this definition seems to include anything that doesn’t specifically mention a roaring fire and a corset. I suppose even that could be included dependant on the material and tightness of the corset, and the implied uses of fireside equipment.
