On Bostonist: Dan Aykroyd and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls

For your bemusement, check out my most recent Bostonist post:

Boston (or a certain portion thereof) is abuzz with the opening of the new House of Blues on Landsdowne Street, which if you’ll recall we were unable to appreciate due to certain screw-ups during the sneak preview.

Actor, comedian, and Canadian Dan Aykroyd is a partner of the chain, and so Jonathon Soroff interviewed him in the latest Improper Bostonian. These days, pretty much any interview with Aykroyd is comedy gold, thanks to his weird beliefs in alien visitors, ghosts, and crystal skulls with magical healing powers possibly originating from the lost civilization of Atlantis.

No, seriously, please click the previous link and watch the unintentionally hilarious sales video, which writer and Brookline native John Hodgman described as such:

NOT SINCE Dick Van Patten’s Hobo Chili for Dogs have I confronted a product so strange and marvelously implausible that I feel robbed somehow of what might have been a beautiful, sublime joke, were it not all so undeniably real.

In the brief Improper interview Aykroyd mentions his interest and belief in ghosts and psychics, but the best quote has got to be this: “David Blaine has done a lot of work, and he really does levitate.”

  1. @marilove:

Yeah. The only problem is, it doesn’t appear that GB3 has been greenlighted to begin filming yet. Course, I don’t know for sure. I’ll bet there are some movie buffs here who have more information, or at least more juicy gossip.

  2. @Sam Ogden: Did you watch the video? (I assume you’re talking about the skull vodka video linked to…) Because, I dunno, I think it’s pretty clear that he’s totally serious, and this is supported by his very outspoken belief in the paranormal.

  3. @Rebecca:

Yeah. I didn’t say I thought it was meant to be a viral campaign. Danny’s been loopy for a few years now. I was just pointing out that some people have speculated about it. Even your boy, John Hodgman, has an update at the bottom of his post concerning the chatter.

  4. @Sam Ogden: Yeah, I suspect the people floating that rumor were unaware of Aykroyd’s zany beliefs, and grabbed the most plausible explanation left.

@Joerg: No worries. As far as I know, Bill Murray is still effing awesome.

  5. Speaking of Aykroyd, I just re-watched My Girl this weekend and criiiiied. If anyone ever needs a movie to cry to, that is the one!

He is crazy, but he was pretty hilarious on SNL. Oh, and Ghostbusters = amazing sauce.

  6. So umm… I kinda want a bottle of Crystal Head Vodka. I sure as hell don’t want to contribute any money to them but it is a cool frikkin bottle!

  7. @Detroitus. I’m with you….pretty sweet bottle. Would it be worth paying for it if you can have it out at parties and when people ask you can say, “I got it from Dan Ackroyd. And did you know that he’s a total fruit loop?” Then you can tell them of all the craziness and everyone can laugh and laugh and laugh and then do some shots and laugh some more. And maybe one of your guests who believes crazy shit will quietly think…I don’t want to be as loony as that, maybe I should read a book by Michael Shermer?

And if that doesn’t happen at least everyone will be really drunk.

  8. after his lifetime of comedy, it’s hard to believe he’s not kidding again. Actually–I’m just going to tell myself he’s still kidding. It’s less weird that way.

  9. I’m still trying to figure out what diamonds would do to vodka that makes them so much better at filtration than standard carbon. Other than as a gimmick to get wealthy suckers and people who think that spending more than $100 a bottle on, well, anything means they have good taste in whatever it is they are spending so much damn money on.

  10. To be fair, the vodka sells at $50 at Bevmo! Not the cheapest, (nor the most expensive) and certainly not the highest rated (actually, I saw no rating on the bevmo! site.) It is a cool bottle, but I think Treasure Island Hotel and Casino still sells skull mugs that are cheaper and cooler.

  11. I’ll likely buy a bottle just because it looks cool.

As for Ghostbusters, Gene Stupinsky and Lee Eisenburg from The Office are listed as screenwriters. None of the original cast is signed as of yet, however all are currently working on Ghostbusters the video game.
