Hey, Atlanta skeptics – don’t forget that this month’s Skeptics in the Pub is this FRIDAY, not Saturday like we usually have it. Â Same place and parents, get a sitter or bring the kids along because this month we’re featuring Dale McGowan, author of Parenting Beyond Belief, who’ll be speaking and answering questions. We’ll also be talking about next month’s Skepticamp Atlanta, which is right around the corner.
I also got an email this week from Patrick, a brave soul in Jackson, Mississippi, who is trying to get a Skeptics group together in the deep South.  Any other folks in the area – join Patrick’s Facebook group and go check out their first event on January 27th.  $1 beers will be involved!
I may go to Jackson just for the dollar beers.

I lived in Jackson, MS for a couple of years. Compared to Jackson, Atlanta is as “deep south” as Stockholm.
@Gabrielbrawley: Spoken like someone who has never been to Mississippi :) Atlanta’s downright cosmopolitan in comparison :)
@Gabrielbrawley: I have relatives in Georgia, and when we went to visit them for Thanksgiving I was shocked (shocked!) at all the Obama signs everywhere. That state almost went blue. They kept their signs up until Saxby won (sigh). But they are mostly still religious as hell.

I was amazed and saddened by the stark difference of the beauty of the land and the deep poverty and squalor of the towns and cities. I don’t think I’ve been through Georgia. If I have been I’ve drunk the memories away.
Sorry to “comment crash” but how does one get an event put on the skepchick’s calendar? I’ve used the “contact” button and also sent mail to Rebecca as listed on the calendar page, but to no avail. Am I missing something? I’ve got two events coming up in Madison WI that I’d love to spread the word about.
Jackson isn’t too bad. You’re doing the place a disservice and probably talking me up a bit too much. Brave? No. Crazy? Yes!
The crowd will be small, true. But in these strange and faithful lands, there is bound to be much to be skeptical of.
If you come from distant places in order to buy 1$ beers, the first five beers for the first five travellers are on me.
I cannot guarantee your return, especially after all the beers are consumed. We have finalized a location. I am saving my quarters.

Jackson probably is fairly liberal, at least in comparison to the rest of Mississippi. I grew up in an equivalent city in Alabama (Huntsville), and the few atheist/skeptical groups I participated in there were small but enjoyable.
And people get in your face less than you’d think. In the South, that sort of thing is rude. They may not vote to make things easier for non-Christians, but they won’t spit on you either.
(In general. I never participated in a protest about the Ten Commandments in a courthouse or attended one of the book burnings sponsored by a local Baptist megachurch. YMMV.)
In short: you’ll have better luck in Jackson than, say, Tupelo :)
