Houston Area Skeptics January Meetup

I’m as excited as a little baby tree lobster to announce the Houston Area Skeptics’ first official meetup of 2009. The gathering will take place in the back room of the Ragin’ Cajun cafe and bar (Richmond Ave. location) on Wednesday, January 14th, at 6:30pm, and last until they kick us out.

In addition to lots of delicious beer and killer Cajun food, the meetup will feature excellent conversation and will be slopping over with sciency/skeptical fun.

Yours truly will entertain and enlighten the group with a brief talk about the Texas State Board of Education, their foibles in recent history, and their impending meeting in January to standardize the science curriculum for the state. Hopefully I won’t make you fall asleep in your gumbo.

Also, once I’m done with the political and philosophical overview related to the push to have religious myths taught in science classes, my pal Richard Sucgang, PhD from Columbia and current Asst. Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Baylor College of Medicine, will bring hard science into the mix with a talk about the evidence for evolution in genome sequences.

His talk, geared for the layperson, will emphasize the strength of evolution at a time when fundamentalist Christians are trying to promote weaknesses in the theory.
