Austin Area Skeptics Meetup Tonight

Late last year, Taysia Glover, began putting the word out in the streets of Austin, Texas to see who might be interested in forming a skeptics group. Well, Austin area skeptics have responded.

The new group will meet for the first time tonight (Thursday, Jan 29, 2009) at 6:00pm at the Waterloo Ice House located on 38th St. and Lamar.

Expectations are high for the Austin Area Skeptics to be a formidable skeptics group. Austin is one of the premier cities in the U.S., filled with free thinkers, scientists, politicians, musicians, and all manner of avant-garde culture, and hopefully the group will be able to draw people from all of those backgrounds.

So be sure to venture out tonight for the inaugural gathering of the Austin Area Skeptics.

  1. Wait just a moment there. “Austin Area Skeptics?” I thought it was going to specifically be called “Austin Skeptics Society,” or similar? I only agreed to help promote them if they had a funny acronym. Hmph.

  2. “free thinkers, scientists, politicians, musicians, and all manner of avant-garde culture, and hopefully the group will be able to draw people from all of those backgrounds.”

    – Well, I’ve got your “far too old to be a student, bald-headed, scary-looking, divorced father of four” part covered. Which is a major part of Texas.

  3. @Rebecca:

I’ve seen Taysia use both in the email correspondence I’ve had with her, but the facebook group is called “Austin Skeptical Society.” I’m sure we’ll talk about it tonight through!

  4. Hello All!
I could not be any happier or more excited about today! It really couldn’t have happened without all the help from Skepchick, Rebecca and Sam. Thank you so very much.

Although I love the buzz about the name controversy, I am going to have to settle it. It is officially Austin Skeptical Society, I could not resist the obvious A.S.S. acronym. Austin area skeptics was more of a descriptive term…Sorry for the confusion!
I really can’t wait to meet all of you and start something great.

  5. I am digging the ASS mistress title, I hope it’s not misleading…
    T-minus 2 hours and counting!!!

  6. @misstaysia:

Maybe we can make you a shirt or something, yah? You can be the Mistress of ASS, and the rest of us – quite deservedly, I’m sure – will be the ASSholes.

I am very excited, by the way. Tonight is going to be great!
