Skepchick Quickies 12.26

  • First vertebrate eye to use mirror instead of lens – “The spookfish is the only deep-sea fish with eyes that have been shown to produce a focused image when looking both up and down. “This is the first demonstration that vertebrates are not as optically boring as we thought,” says Douglas.” Thanks Steve.
  • Flash of lights we have heard on high – Some Canadian Skeptic’s take on the “angel” seen in the hospital security footage.
  • Hysteria in four acts – Emory’s great summary of this article is: “A psychiatry professor finds common threads linking claims of
    multiple-personality disorder, recovered memories, witch-hunts,
mesmerism, and clinical hysteria.  Oh, you’ll also learn why hysterics
    never pee on themselves.”
  • DIY genetic engineering – I’m so disappointed I didn’t get a genetic engineering kit for Christmas now.
  • Animals opening presents seemed like a good topical cute animal pick.  The meerkats are adorable.  Also topical is the latest Tree Lobster comic.

  1. It’s a Christmas Miracle!!!

    …or a beam of sunlight.

I like how they even provide the ‘out’ if the girl did die, the angel was coming to take her to heaven, but what I really would like to know, if the angel healed her, why didn’t he finish the job, surely an angel could take away all of her infirmities, not just those that her immune system could handle.

  2. Re: Tree Lobsters –

I live only 15 miles from Hell, MI and about 300 miles from Paradise, MI. Nice to see the Tree Lobsters reference something so close to home. I wonder if the restaurant, The Dam Site Inn in Hell has Tree Lobsters on the menu. I’m quite certain Tree Lobsters are not served in Paradise.

  3. “31-year-old computer programmer Meredith L. Patterson is trying to develop genetically altered yogurt bacteria that will glow green to signal the presence of melamine, the chemical that turned Chinese-made baby formula and pet food deadly”

Hey, I’d be happy with yogurt bacteria that just glows green all the time. Bioluminescent yogurt FTW!

  4. I got my 10-year-old a DIY genetic engineering kit! I wonder if it’s the same one. I have a lovely picture of her holding it up, right in front of the Christmas tree. Apparently you can use it to extract DNA from fruit; how cool is that? I bought it at Hobby Lobby, which seemed richly ironic to me, as that store is like a front for fundamentalist Christians, I think.

  5. I’ve driven through Hell! Small world, Endicot! I don’t recall seeing any tree lobsters, though…

The “angel” was obviously just a lens flare from the sunlight reflecting off of the equipment and waxed tile floor. I’ll bet the rest of the frames (that they didn’t show us) look nothing like an angel. Sensationalism and the unusual sell papers/web hits.

I can’t completely agree with the Canadian Skeptic about Christmas and ghosts – after all, Dicken’s A Christmas Carol had three in it. :-) It’s not that far a stretch to have a Christmas ‘supernatural’ visitation.
