Cool science, dumb quote

Scientists are not always the best communicators, which is fine. They don’t need to be able to produce a media-friendly soundbite in order to do their job. However, some are better at it than others as a result of necessity. If you want media coverage for your project, you need to learn how to make it interesting or palatable for a layman audience. There is specialist training available for precisely this which really helps, but sometimes you can see where the “ground it in something the audience will relate to on an everyday level” or “compare it with something recogniseable” coaching begins…and unfortunately where sense sometimes ends.

Today I give you this gem from Dr Fausto Ferraccioli from the British Antarctic Survey, who is talking about the just-launched and jolly interesting expedition to map and explore the vast mountain range buried under 4km of Antartic ice:

“You can almost think about it as exploring another planet – but on Earth.”
