  1. Sometimes, the U S of A really scares me… And pisses me off.
Looking at that abortion mahooha, I am (again) reminded of 1984, and again I fear the influence of US ‘values’ on the rest of the world… (Please note that the ‘values’ I am talking about here are those like those expressed by that law, creationism, religious nuttery etc.)

By the way, maybe those that wrote that law should have read this report? ;)

PS: First post from long-time lurker. Yay!

  2. Solitas, you think the USA is scary?
Well, apparently, my homeland has just been invaded by flesh eating slugs.

  3. *nod* Of course, once I read the bootno *cough* footnote, it became less scary. ;)

Just don’t forward that news story to Hollywood: Slugs on a plane!
“Enough is enough! I have had it with these motherf****** slugs on this motherf****** plane! ”
“Someone get this f*****’ slug off my ass!”

  4. Yes… I felt sure I would have noticed 5 foot slugs prowling about. Even in Wales. We still have sheep, though. They are almost as weird.

  5. My favorite line from spores article…..

“You can create ecosystems, biospheres … We try to make it real science.”

  6. I don’t know what fills me with more terror, five foot flesh eating slugs, or old men legislating about my uterus.

Luckily, because of abstinence only education the two of the won’t learn how to breed and create the scariest pasty, flesh eating, law making monstrosity ever. OH! maybe it will eat unwanted fetuses! Get the slugs and old men a motel room and a bottle of cheap champagne, STAT!

  7. At the risk of sounding stupid, isn’t one of the reasons why humans have spread out over most of the globe ’cause we can eat (that is obtain essential vitamins, minerals and energy) wide range of foods?

If the differences between race we so great that we needed specific vitamins, wouldn’t we also have obvious dietary differences?

*first time poster, medium time lurker :p

  9. Aw yeah, my quickies bring all the lurkers to the yard.

Also, the flesh-eating slugs are creating COTW material left and right.

  10. I dunno, I’m generally not that scared of anything flesh eating that I can out run, or even out walk.

I’d rather have 5ft flesh eating slugs that 5 ft flesh eating rabbits, but then I am a glass half full kind of guy.

  11. Lox, you SHOULD be afraid… VERY afraid. Don’t you know that when run-walking away from these slugs the chances of you tripping and screaming helplessly while the slug bears down on you instead of just getting up and run-walking again are HUGE?!?!

  12. The ID the Future podcast featured a graphic artist who worked on the Spore conversion to DS. They were excited that the player could “intelligently” direct the Spore evolution. I think they were going for the “hey, we’re hip because we’re talking to the guy who takes someone else’s art and makes it simpler for a simplified version of a cool game that everyone will paly on a different platform.” They’re hip.

  13. But is it greater or lesser than my chances of standing still of 5 minutes screaming “NOOOOOOOOOO” while I wait for a steam roller to catch up to me and crush me???

What should I fear more??? The 5 ft flesh eating slugs or the incredibly slow and easily avoided steam roller?

  14. I think you should play it safe and avoid both… But imagine a steamroller driven by a flesh-eating slug! In that case you should just give up..

  15. Actually, when you said “while the slug bears down on you…”
    I started imagining flesh eating slug-bears ….

can’t sleep, slug-bears will eat me

  16. So is the anti-abortion movement comprised completely of religious folks, or are there non-religious reasons for hurting these women?

  17. Hanes – Well, if you contribute the ‘every sperm is sacred’ mentality to religion, the all that’s left is a general malisciousness…

  18. Oh freaking duh, I KNEW that Spore article was familiar, but do I bother to check back a few days worth of quickies? No, I just check yesterday’s.

Jen and I are apparently a forgetful hivemind. :)

Here, look a baby batman to appease you. Now take care of it and don’t let it get eaten by the flesh-eating slugs.

  19. @Lox:”If the differences between race we so great that we needed specific vitamins, wouldn’t we also have obvious dietary differences?”

Well, I’m by no means defending race-specific viamins (in fact I think that vitamin pills are almost always unneccesary, and can actually do more harm..), but people from different places of origin DO have different dietary needs/intolerances.

I have known several East Asians and Native Americans who not only can’t handle their liquor (at ALL), but they can’t deal with dairy. I, having been developed for the last 10,000 years or so in a triangle between Odessa, Strassbourg, and Frankfurt, can eat infinite cheese, milk, and other dairy, and alcohol does not make me insanely drunk/red in the face/crazy. I know that it’s anecdotal, but I’m pretty sure I’ve read studies. Inuit can traditionally subsist on a diet of almost exclusively fatty meat and fish (the word Eskimo means meat-eater, I’ve heard), right? Wow, I have nothing to back any of this up…to the internets!

  20. @ Whitebird – I know what you mean. Being of mostly English and French descent, I can survive entirely on a diet of the souls of babies. I mean, sometimes I have to eat a puppy to shock the palet, but it’s mostly baby souls.

    =o)

  21. Yum! Do baby souls taste like black pudding? I’m always getting grossed out by certain Filipino dishes, then I remember that I love the taste of liverwurst and black pudding…

  22. Alright…I’m not gonna lie, but I’m SO EXCITED for the spore game to come out. Sadly, my laptop does not have the proper video card to play said amazing game. It makes me a sad panda.
