Some girls have all the fun….

Rub it in. While you all are enjoying the intellectual stimulation of TAM5.5 (in Florida of all places), I’m stuck here in Colorado reading stuff like this in the letters to the editor of the Rocky Mountain News:

New Testament also speaks of warming
I would like to add a different perspective to the global warming dialog.
The Bible speaks about global warming in 2 Peter 3:10. It says, “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.”
Yes, global warming is in our future.
Eileen Junker, Denver

Well, that sounds more like the demise of the sun to me, when it will turn into a red giant in about 5 billion years, but far beit from me to tell anyone how to interpret the Bible.

Lest I make it sound like Denver is wholly overrun by religion, I’ll be reading from my book-in-progress at a SkeptiCamp — a a free conference where the Participants give the lectures, lead group discussion, entertain, etc. — on March 22nd, 2008. More on that later…

When she's not working, she blogs, studies Lithuanian, reads science and sci-fi books, mouths off on atheist forums, and checks her email every three minutes. (She does that when she's working, too.) Although she loves to chat, she can't keep an IM program open or she'd never get anything else done.

  1. I never cease to be amazed at how much crap can be culled from various 'interpretations' of the Bible – or by how many of those people actually believe the stuff they spew all over the place. You'd think at least a few of them would take the time to look at the context before 'interpreting'. Bizarre…

  2. So Al Gore should give his prize to this woman…

Ever notice how all bible predictions are always interpreted in retrospective? Science discovered this – Oh, there it was all the time!

  3. NB: I am religious, and do not believe in evolution – but at the same time, I believe in pursuit of the truth. I looked up the scripture in question in the New World Translation:

10 Yet Jehovah’s day will come as a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a hissing noise, but the elements being intensely hot will be dissolved, and earth and the works in it will be discovered.

This sounds more like it's referring to smelting, a refining process. This doesn't fit the notion of a literal destruction, either. 2 Peter 3:11-13 reads:

11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of persons ought YOU to be in holy acts of conduct and deeds of godly devotion, 12 awaiting and keeping close in mind the presence of the day of Jehovah, through which [the] heavens being on fire will be dissolved and [the] elements being intensely hot will melt! 13 But there are new heavens and a new earth that we are awaiting according to his promise, and in these righteousness is to dwell.

  4. Just to add:

Perhaps we should look hard and long into the sacred pages to find signs of evolution. *That* would be a blast!

  5. Buh-buh-but the Biiiiible says global warming won't happen!

Genesis 8.22 – "And all the rest of the days of the earth, seed and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease."

    See? Climate'sa last f'rever, s'there.

  6. Well, since the climate today in the Delaware Valley is much more like the climate I remember in Taiwan some years ago, I'd say the warming spell is a given.

As to Denver, that would rather depend upon how soon I can stop being unemployed. :(

I wouldn't mind, if they at least did so consistently. But certain scientific discoveries are vehemently denied/ignored because they contradict the more obvious interpretation of the stories in the bible (like evolution for example).

They've resigned themselves on the issues of a flat earth and geocentrism, but if creation is going to take the same amount of time, we're going to be well into the 23rd century before the last creationists finally realize their position makes no sense.

    You should….

I looked up the scripture in question in the New World Translation:

It would be wise for you to drop the new world translation….

Perhaps we should look hard and long into the sacred pages to find signs of evolution. *That* would be a blast!

Its there my cryptid friend……but only in the form of micro evolution…..no BS abiogenesis, or macro evolution.

I've already schooled exarch in this enough…..some people never learn.

  9. Hmm..good thing I avoid that part of the paper!

In any case, thanks for alerting me to the presence of SkeptiCamp! I had no this existed in good ol' Colorado. And it's so close to home! I'll have to try and attend. =D
