Calls for submissions

If you are an unbeliever and you have a story to tell, here are two opportunities to have your voice heard. From the comments here, it’s apparent that a lot of you have some iteresting things to say, so check out these calls for submissions and let’s hear those keyboards clicking!

The Secular Student Alliance is working on an anthology called Our Struggles with Disbelief. Note that they say they are looking for “short stories,” but they mean nonfiction, so “essays” would probably be a more accurate description.

Our Struggles with Disbelief will be a compilation of short stories from current and upcoming leaders in the atheist/agnostic/freethinker/humanist movement. The short stories should be non-fiction and discuss challenges that the author has faced as a nonbeliever. Submissions should be no longer than 4,000 words (about 10 pages double-spaced, Times New Roman 12).

And in case you missed this one from the Skepchick Quickies the other day, The Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers is also working on an anthology called Atheists in Foxholes:

MAAF is collecting stories for an anthology to ensure that everyone knows that there are atheists in foxholes. This anthology will include first-hand accounts of Atheists, Agnostics, Freethinkers, Humanists, Secularists, and other non-believers who have served in the military in any capacity or who have a close association with someone who has served. We atheists have served honorably throughout history and still do today. We serve in foxholes, on planes, on ships, and in the service and defense of our values wherever that service may require us. We will ensure that our story is told. We need your help.

Hat tip to Hemant.

Donna Druchunas is a freelance technical writer and editor and a knitwear designer. When she's not working, she blogs, studies Lithuanian, reads science and sci-fi books, mouths off on atheist forums, and checks her email every three minutes. (She does that when she's working, too.) Although she loves to chat, she can't keep an IM program open or she'd never get anything else done.

  1. I think this is a great idea. Being in the midwest (Saint Louis, MO) and having been in the overtly religious military has given me somewhat of a myopia on the status of nonbelief in the rest of the world. I can’t wait to share my stories and read the stories of others!

  2. Aaron, that sounds great! Good luck on the submission. Your story sounds interesting.

Kimbo Jones, not sure which one you are asking about, but I don't see why not for either one. The links have more info and contact information.
