Can someone remind me….

Why the US is allies with Saudi Arabia?

A court in the ultra-conservative kingdom of Saudi Arabia is punishing a female victim of gang rape with 200 lashes and six months in jail, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

The 19-year-old woman — whose six armed attackers have been sentenced to jail terms — was initially ordered to undergo 90 lashes for “being in the car of an unrelated male at the time of the rape,” the Arab News reported.

  1. I'm trying to think of a rational response or comment, but all that comes to mind are Joycean torrents of unprintable vulgar expletives.

  2. The Republican party is made up primarily of rich white males who are jealous of how well Saudi Arabia subjugates its women. I tried to say that sarcastically, but having written it, it seems a bit too believable…

  3. Why are we allies with Saudi Arabia?

    Bubblin' crude…Texas Tea…oil, that is

And the Suez Canal. It's nice to be able to skip the trip around the cape.

And, of course, it's the Holy Land, and God tells us that we can't let it be filled up with people of another religion (please forget for a moment that all religions are "another religion" to someone).

And the desert has a dangerous beauty that draws people to it.

  4. No. This is outrageous. Even in Texas, if these men were caught, they'd've stapled them to a tree by their scrotums and set the dogs on them.

–Though even that is a bit too lenient for 'em.

    Bastards.

  5. Don't be foolish, its not about oil. Its a professional courtesy from one group of religious fundamentalists to another.

  6. Grillparzer– It is my understanding that in order to ensure the victim's survival, the lashes may be administered over a period of time. Say, for example, forty per day. This would continue until all prescribed lashes have been administered.

  7. Sometimes I have a really hard time remembering that we are supposed to be living in the 21st. Century when I read about such a vile act, and I am talking more about the judiciary here rather than the rapists. Though, unfortunately, we still have more than our fair share in the so enlightened West who would share the judges decision. After all, they do love to trot out the old 'she must have brought it on herself with her dress or her behaviour' gambit, so loved by misogynistic moralising fuckwits everywhere.

  8. I'm against capital punishment as a rule, but gang rape? That crosses so many lines the perps are no longer human. They no longer deserve life. And neither would a judge that punishes a woman for being victimized.

  9. Remember this story from 2002? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/1874
"Saudi Arabia's religious police stopped schoolgirls from leaving a blazing building because they were not wearing correct Islamic dress, according to Saudi newspapers." Fifteen girls died.

Never has a cliche been been more appropriate, "With friends like these, who need enemies?"

  10. To misquote two of my favourite authors–

"Oh, Religion! Thou'rt but a tale, told by an idiot! Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing! To the last, I shall grapple with thee; for Hate's sake, I shall spit my last breath at thee!"

  11. Yeah, I know it's corny. But the only other thing I can think of is shrieking howlingly awful profanity and curses at Muslims.

  12. And why exactly do people defend this religion as a religion of peace????? Hell, the Saudi's are viewed and relatively moderate in the muslim world! If this is how moderates act…….

  13. Well, as we all know, the moderates are ultimately to blame for the actions of the extremists, or rather, for their reluctance to yank the leash of the extremists when they're crossing the line.

Because if you don't oppose it, you've condoned it.

Similar things can be said for abortion clinic bombings and 10-commandments displays. Though the results are not as horrific, the cause is the same: good people standing by doing nothing.
