Atheism is the new black

Hey, did you know that atheism is cool? Fantastic!

An article on WorldNetDaily, which is mostly a load of bullshit, lies, and religious fear-mongering, does make a couple of inspiring points:

Somehow, atheism – just like homosexuality, which used to be considered shameful and something to hide – is now becoming hip, sophisticated, enlightened, even a badge of honor.

In earlier eras, atheists were on the fringes of society, mistrusted by the mainstream. Those few who dared to publicly push their beliefs on society, like Madalyn Murray O’Hair, were widely regarded as malevolent kooks. But today, Hitchens’ No. 1 New York Times bestseller, which has dominated the nonfiction charts for months, boldly condemns religion – including Christianity – as “violent, irrational, intolerant, allied to racism, tribalism, and bigotry, invested in ignorance and hostile to free inquiry, contemptuous of women and coercive toward children.”

Apparently, according to a new Gallup poll, almost half of all Americans would now vote for an atheist for president.

The article is actually a review of an issue of WhisleBlower that is all about The Rise Of Atheist America. It’s about time! I am going to make a poster of this cover and hang it up on my office bulletin board.

Waddya know, maybe for once in my life I’ll get to hang out with the cool kids!

When she's not working, she blogs, studies Lithuanian, reads science and sci-fi books, mouths off on atheist forums, and checks her email every three minutes. (She does that when she's working, too.) Although she loves to chat, she can't keep an IM program open or she'd never get anything else done.

  1. "Waddya know, maybe for once in my life I’ll get to hang out with the cool kids!"

Hah, you WISH. We'll just form an even smaller clique and not invite you to all our reindeer games.

  2. Nice to be out of fringe kookdom and into the real world. While it's nice to see that 45% in the Gallup Poll would vote for an atheist. It is also a little disheartening to see that title on the bottom of the list, especially in the light of how many would vote for a catholic; those people are scary.

  3. It was cool being an Atheist when everyone hated us. It's no fun now. What other minority group can I join that everyone hates?

    Jehovah's Witnesses? No, too intense.

Scientologists? No, I can't afford them.

    Creationists? No, too silly.

I guess I'll have to stay an Atheist (like I have a choice) and work to get people to hate me again.

  4. hoverfrog,

You could always try paganism. That was the last cool religion to claim. After Charmed came out, everyone wanted to be wiccan. Now everyone wants to be atheist? We'll see how long this fad lasts.

  5. Seriously? I thought Charmed was generally considered to be a bad show. Well, I suppose it ran for eight years, so you'd think it had to be at least okay…

  6. Damn… i wish i was an atheist. (Un)fortunately i'm an agnostic. Can i still hang out with you cool atheists? Please? Pretty please? I'll do your math homework for you if you let me. =D

  7. Briarking, I'm afraid I've done that already (before Charmed as well) and I can't go back. The Native American mythologies have always held an interest and a mystery for me though. Very humanist in their own way. Sadly once you become a skeptic you just can't give it up without brain surgery or massive amounts of brainwashing.
