Skepticism

Perry is gone.

Last night, Perry DeAngelis, fellow co-host of The Skeptics’ Guide to the Universe podcast, died. As many of you know, Perry was ill the past few weeks and had been unable to be on the show, but I was sure that he would be back to his usual self this week. I guess that’s the way it is sometimes.

I can’t type more or I’ll start crying at work. Perry would’ve called me an over-emotional girly hippie chick and then winked in a way that was inaudible yet still detectable through my headset. I’d laugh and call him a cold-hearted conservative prick.

  1. What??? I had no idea his illness was that serious! I'm so shocked!

I'm so, so sorry to hear this.

  2. As I just wrote via email, Perry was my favorite rogue. I didn't even know hom personally, and yet I'm going to miss him; I can't imagine how the SGU crew and his (other) friends and family must feel. Damn.

Someone should do a "best of Perry" SGU uncut or something, closing with him singing the skeptical quote. Yeah, I'm sort of rambling, but what else am I gonna do.

    My condolences.

  3. I don't even know what to write. This is incredibly sad. My heart goes out to you, the skeptic's guide, and Perry's family. He will be missed.

  4. "Yeah, dolphins and monkeys basically could play chess together. Those are brilliant animals."

    – Perry DeAngelis, an American Skeptic of some note.

  5. Wow. I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope you and the rest of the Rogues can get through…I didn't even know him and Berandor's "American Skeptic of some note" nearly choked me up.

Well, express my sympathy to the rest of the panel, and to Perry's family. It's certainly a sad day, and sadder still for those who knew Perry than for people like me who were merely entertained by him every week. Goodnight, funnyman.

  6. Condolences to his family and friends, and to those who, like me, only knew him as a wonderfully acerbic voice on the podcast.

This weekend, I'm going to go visit some monkeys in Perry's memory.

  7. Perry was one of those guys you just assumed would always be around because he's just too damned stubborn. One imagined that he'd be there when Alcor revived Jay chewing him out for being such a lazy bones.

    Ah, well. So it goes.

  8. Perry was a wonderful man. Even to the end, he wouldn't let a podcast go by without his wonderful quotes.

  9. Just wanted to add my sypathy to his friends and family. I know that everyone who listens to the Skeptic's Guide is going to miss him. The show won't be the same without his sense of humor.

  10. I'm very sad. In these past several weeks (to my own surprise), I have been greatly missing Perry on the Skeptic's Guide, and have been looking forward to his return. Now I can't even do that. :-(

  11. I've compiled a list of audio Perry quotes at SGUFans.net (it's at the bottom). I'm going through more episodes this evening to find more quotes. I will be using suggestions found on here and on the SGU forums as well.

  12. This is sad news indeed. I'd hoped to meet Perry last week in Brooklyn, then had to be content with waiting for him to return to SGU–and now . . .

  13. That is so sad,

He seemed, to me, like a very lovable person.

I'm going to miss the "Don't get me started"'s (if that's not a word, it should be).

Describing the Atkin's diet as "The one where you can shove steaks down your mouth" will stay with me forever.

In the gym, low carbs have been all the rage since the 60's. It's nice to have some "ammunition" against such foolishness…I owe that to Perry.

    Well,

    He can't be replaced.

In this day of interchangeable and generic everything,

I think that says it alll,

  14. Sorry to hear that. I will miss his grumpy homour. In is honour I will pit monkeys against birds in cage matches util I have ran through all the possible cominations of monkey and bird species.

Seriously though he will be missed and the SGU will never be quit the same.

My best wishes to all thoses close to him.

    Alex

  15. I haven't listened to the podcasts lately, so I didn't know he was ill. I'm sorry to hear that, and you, his family and friends all have my sympathy and condolences.

  16. Wow. Just wow. I haven't listened in so long…that this is feeling like such a blow is surprising. Now I'm going to have to listen to all the episodes I missed.

  17. I don't know what to say to you, Rebecca, except that I'm sorry to hear that, and will miss him although I never met him and never even exchanged a message with him…

Perry DeAngelis, you fought the good fight, and you shone the piercing light of skepticism into the foggy gloom of Woo. Your light isn't extinguished, it's been taken on and multiplied by the skeptics guide listeners and NESS members you have touched throughout your life. I'd say I hope to see you in the next life, but of course, you'd find that more disturbing than comforting. Perry DeAngelis, you have made an impact which shall be remembered, and you shall be missed more than you could ever have imagined.

the monkey shall rise, and the bird shall fall, in honour of you.

    Dylan

  18. I've never heard the podcast and don't recall having even heard of Perry before now, but the comments here tell me that I've really missed out. You have my sympathies for losing such a wonderful friend and colleague. Take care.

  19. So sad. My condolences to all of the SGU team.

I've just been listening to the show for this past year, and already I'm hooked on it. He will be missed.

  20. I already said it on the SGU forums, but…

I'm happy that I got to know a little bit of who Perry was, even if only through the SGU podcast. I'll miss him and regret never getting to meet him in person.

Condolences to his family, friends, SGU rogues and fans alike.

  21. Well, I come back from my vacation and the world is no longer the same. I missed the last few podcasts but, I couldn't wait to start listening to them again and now I learn that I will never hear Perry's grumpy voice again. He was great and he will be missed. My condolences to his family and all the SGU team.

  22. If you need any evidence for how he will be missed, just google his name. The results are FULL of remembrances. My eyes are wet and I didnt ever actually get to meet him. Damn I am surprised at how hard this has hit me. I can not imagine what you lucky ones that knew him are feeling. We all that heard him are thinking of you guys.

  23. I just listened to the brief remembrance episode and I'm happy to say it made me laugh. It left me feeling the need to go find an ostrich to beakflip.

  24. even though his ideas on politics riled me up, i liked his personality a lot and am quite shocked that he is gone. i feel bad that i suggested that he should get a nasty computer virus after he made fun of Macs. im sure it wouldnt have bothered him, he was tough.

this was the saddest podcast i have ever heard. we will miss you Perry.

  25. I know it’s been two years but I just wanted to say that I think it is a good thing to keep this page active. Time will lessen the sadness of his passing and heighten the fond memories and happy rememberances of his time with us. Just to let you know, I still listen to some of the old SGU podcasts and they are wonderful to this day. ‘Your memory lives on.’
